It was Mestre Itaborá who brought Mestre Casquinha to teach us how to write songs. Mestre Itaborá would have a new song whenever I saw him, which was a lot! He would say I don’t sit down and write songs, the songs come to me. They come to me when I’m doing other things and they come all the time.

It was as if he was a vessel for his music and poetry. I was only able to attempt to write a song to honor him because of his example and model of the music he would write.

This song, Zelador, was written to honor him. It was written in collective and we continue to add verses. I invite you all to write verses of your own to this song. Take the chorus of this song and make it your own. It doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to all of us who love and have been inspired by Mestre Itaborá. Axé

Sending my deepest condolences to family and friends of Mestre Itaborá. Over the years I watched him grow and evolve to become a dynamic leader in our capoeira community.
