Ismail's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sheik Ismail Yunis, who was born on September 1, 1940, and left us on February 10, 2024. Sheik Ismail was an example of strength, embodying the belief that God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.
Born with a stern yet warm personality, he was known to bear a combination of firmness and affection. He was not only funny but also loving and caring. His love for his family was immense, as huge as the pilgrimage he had undertaken on foot from Somalia to Mecca. As a veteran in the army, he displayed valiant dedication and fought for independence, reinforcing his reputation as a pillar of strength and courage.
In 1998, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he became an attendee at Masjid An-Nur, a local mosque. His commitment to his faith was unflinching, as was his devotion to his community.
Sheik Ismail was predeceased by his beloved spouse, Fatima Sadeek. He is survived in grief by his sons Yaqub Ibrahim, Saaid Ibrahim, and Sharmakay Ibrahim, and his daughter Ruwayda Ibrahim. He was also a loving grandfather to grandsons Abdirazak, Mohamed, and Zakariya Ismail, and granddaughters Shamsa, Ramla, and Imaan Ismail.
It is a tremendous loss for his family and community but his legacy will continue to live on. Sheik Ismail leaves behind a legacy of kindness – a testament to a life well-lived and a man well-loved. The lessons of his life, the strength of his character, and the warmth of his heart will remain cherished memories in the hearts of those who had the fortune of knowing him.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
