Irina's obituary
Irina (Ira) Mechikow, an amazing mother and a beacon of joy and laughter, passed away on December 11, 2024, in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, at the age of 51. Born on August 17, 1973, in Konotop, Ukraine, Irina's zest for life, ambitious nature, and boundless energy touched everyone she met.
A brilliant medical doctor and clinical researcher, Irina earned her Doctorate from Danilo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University and a Master's in Healthcare Administration from Framingham State University. Her most recent roles at UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Chan Medical School were marked by her invaluable dedication to clinical research and improving the health of others. Additionally, Irina was a proud veteran of the Ukrainian Air Force.
Irina had a bold and adventurous spirit that took her across the globe, always seeking new discoveries. She found joy in the perfect moments spent overlooking the ocean, champagne in hand and seafood by her side, living life to the fullest. At home, she was the consummate hostess, embodying warmth and joy, keeping family and friends entertained with her no-filter humor and sharp wit. Her greatest pride and joy were her children, Jene (Jenny) Stephaniuk, 29, and Andrew Nieto, 17. As a devoted and loving mother, she cherished every moment with them, instilling her strength, charisma, and unwavering standards. A true friend and radiant presence, Irina was also a passionate animal lover, often found caring for dogs and supporting animal welfare.
A memorial to celebrate Irina’s vibrant life will be held at Kelly’s Funeral Home in Worcester on December 21st, with visitation hours from 1:30PM to 2:30PM EST and a service following at 2:30PM EST. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Irina Mechikow Memorial Fund to support the causes she would hold dear: Andrew’s college education, research and education at UMass Medical School, and animal welfare through the ASPCA.
