Inez's obituary
Inez Wilson Meng, of Columbia, SC born on June 6, 1922, in Barnwell, SC passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2024 leaving behind a legacy of love and grace. She was a remarkable individual, finishing as salutatorian and Miss Barnwell High School and dedicating herself to serving her community and church. She moved to Columbia after graduation where she gained a business certificate and became a secretary for T.J Harrelson. There she met her husband of over 60 years, the late Charles B Meng. She is also preceded in death by her two beloved children, Charles E. Meng and Patricia M Bouknight, and her grandson, Bill Todd. She is survived by her daughter, Linda M Bennett, son in law, Pat Bouknight, nieces and nephew, granddaughters, Jessica Meng and Leann B Owen (Danny), grandsons Jeff Bouknight (Carmen), Tim Todd, Gene Todd, and Bob Bennett Jr. (Ashley), and many cherished great and great great grandchildren.
She was a charter member of Kilbourne Park Baptist and later a devoted member of Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church. Inez was an active member of various church groups, including the Suzanna Wesley Circle and the Daytime Fellowshippers for Seniors. She also shared her passion for learning by teaching Ladies Bible School and was recognized for her dedication at Virginia Wingard for teaching over 40 years. Beyond her church activities, she generously supported Serological’s and donated rhogam for over two decades. One of her proudest moments was being voted as Vice President for the Pony League Baseball Association. She worked hard to raise money and provide uniforms for all the leagues when Charles played ball. In her leisure time, Inez enjoyed playing bridge, participating in over four different clubs until recent years, and indulging in her love for literature as an avid reader in all genres. Professionally, she excelled as a hairdresser with a full schedule out of her own home. Later in life, she became a cherished figure as the cashier at the No Name Deli. Inez’s devotion extended to her family, whom she cared for throughout her life.
Inez cherished the Golden Seal awarded to her by House Representative, Chip Huggins on her 100th birthday, a testament to her unwavering dedication to serving her community, family, and friends throughout her lifetime. It symbolized the profound impact she made and the admiration she earned from those around her.
In her final years, Inez found comfort and companionship with her beloved granddaughter Jessica, who remained faithfully by her side in her home, enveloping her with love and friendship. Their bond illuminated Inez's life, bringing warmth and solace during her twilight years.
Inez Meng will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched with her kindness and generosity.
A service to honor Inez’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 20th, with visitation starting at 2:00 PM followed by the services at 3:00 PM at Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church (1500 Broad River Rd Columbia, SC 29210)
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Heart Association or Virginia Wingard UMC.
