Ignatius Hadi's obituary
Ignatius Hadi Pranoto (Jap Kim Tjhan), 85, of San Francisco, CA, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 20, 2025, after a month long battle with complications after his stroke.
Hadi was born on July 1, 1940 to Kunsiati and Mulianto Djapri in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Growing up in Pontianak, he attended a Catholic elementary school and got introduced and grew to love the catholic faith. For junior and senior high school he was sent to study in St Albertus Dempo High School in Malang Indonesia. He graduated and went on to study Civil Engineering at Parahyangan University in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Instead of continuing as an engineer, he change direction and decided to help out his family's business, opening a pharmacy, Apotik Makmur II in Surabaya, Indonesia. The pharmacy thrived and he diligently served the community until his retirement close to 40 years later. While in high school, he met Wiwien, fellow student from his hometown of Pontianak and they wed in 1969, and have never been separated for 56 years, until his passing. They are blessed with having 2 children, Angela Vonny and Theresia Evy. The Catholic faith continue to be the center in the life Hadi and his family. He was one of the early activists in the Marriage Encounter Indonesia and credited with starting the Marriage Encounter in Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. Both Hadi and Wiwien continued to served Marriage Encounter Indonesia for 20+ years until they moved to San Francisco. He is also a well known figure in his parish of St. Vincent de Paul in Surabaya.
For Hadi, his family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned. He was unendingly proud of Angela Vonny, Theresia Evy, and Wiwien and always tried his best to support them. His love and devotion to Wiwien was unwavering until his last day before his stroke. On that day he went shopping for food and other necessities for Wiwien, who are housebound due to her back pain.
When Hadi's first grandson, Joaquin, was born in 2002, he decided to sell his pharmacy business so he will have more time spend with family. Both Hadi and Wiwien then downsized to a smaller house and traveled often to visit Joaquin in the Philippines.
When Nathan, his second grandson was born in 2004, Hadi and Wiwien decided to moved permanently to San Francisco, so they can be closer to the family. The path to the dream of having everybody together in San Francisco was long and winding, but everybody was finally able to to permanently stayed in San Francisco by 2017. With his dream finally came true, Hadi was able to enjoy his golden years with Wiwien. He was still able to go back home to Indonesia a few more times to visit friends and relatives. The last one was almost exactly a year ago.
Hadi, the business entrepreneur has never completely forgotten about his training as a civil engineer. He was very passionate about any DIY projects around the house. Together with Ming and Nathan, his son in law and grandson, he has rebuilt the deck in the backyard, and renovated the bathroom, as well as other DIY projects around the home. Anyone who knew Hadi knew that he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for.
Hadi is survived by his wife Wiwien, his daughters Angela Vonny and Theresia Evy, sons in law Francis M Ramos and Siok Tjong Ming, and grandsons Joaquin Nikolas Pranoto Ramos and Nathaniel Francis Pranoto Tjong.
