Ian's obituary
It is with great sadness that I post the following:
Ian Anthony Randall formerly of Haslett, Michigan, but more recently from Seattle, Washington lived an adventurous life which sadly ended New Year’s Eve of 2025.
Ian was somehow always larger than life. He lived life extravagantly, not in terms of worldly goods, for he was actually very frugal, but in terms of experiences as he had many wonderfully varied adventures throughout his all too-short life. He loved to travel and would go anywhere in the world on a whim, and he made friends wherever he went. Ian lived in Chili and Mexico for short stints as he loved Central America and more recently, he spent significant time in Vietnam, California and Hawaii.
Ian had so many talents. He was an author, writing “The Northern Winds” which is an excellent read and highly rated. He loved all kinds of sports and was a gifted athlete; he was also a talented musician and loved his guitar, which he played in many venues. Ian enjoyed golf, basketball, soccer, fishing, mountain climbing, wilderness camping and rafting, and he was ready for just about any kind of adventure at a moment’s notice. His Christmas gift this year was a jacket for wilderness rafting, orange so he could be found if he capsized.
Ian attended Haslett Community Schools through 12th grade, after which he attained a bachelor’s degree at James Madison College at Michigan State University, a master’s degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Health Policy and Finance from the University of Washington, where he subsequently was also a professor. For the past 10+ years Ian has used Seattle as his home-base from which to travel and stage his adventures.
Ian leaves to grieve: his mother, Ellen Speckman-Randall; his sister, Bree Randall-Gay (Rob Gay, husband and sons Holden, Jude and Archer Gay); his brother Matt Randall (Jessica Randall, wife and children Matilda and Liam Randall); and his partner Khanh Nguyen. He was predeceased by his father Tony Randall in 2005 and sister Lauren in 1985. Ian will be sorely missed by all who knew him and enjoyed his cheerful, funny, engaging, loving and charismatic personality.
