Humzey's obituary

Humzey Yessin, 95, of Lexington, Ky passed away September 17, after a short illness. Born October 6, 1927 in Williamson, West Virginia to Syrian parents who eventually settled in Harlan, Kentucky,  Humzey was the starting guard for the 1944 State Championship basketball Harlan Dragons. He also was an outstanding shortstop for the baseball team, recruited by the Boston Red Sox, playing semi pro for the Bluegrass League in Versailles. His career at the University of Kentucky included both basketball and baseball. He was the student manager for Coach Rupp’s infamous Fabulous Five in 1947. He lettered all four years for UK baseball. After graduating with a degree in Physical Education, Humzey coached basketball and baseball at Georgetown College. He went on to become a Class A PGA pro, director of golf for the Kentucky Department of Parks. He developed courses at Juniper Hill in Frankfort, Tates Creek, and Greenbrier Country Clubs. He also oversaw the Kentucky Department of Parks golf courses for many years later.

Humzey is survived by loving wife Ruby Yessin, married 69 years. Preceded in death by his sister, Amenia and brother Rudy. Humzey is also survived by his sister Hinda (Bob) House, Louisville, Ky; his eight children; Terri, (Pat) Kurowski, Va Beach; Mike Yessin, Lexington, Ky; Amy Yessin, Union Springs, AL; Carla Yessin, Lexington, Ky; Laura Yessin, Myrtle Beach, SC; Tim,(Jennifer) Yessin, Lexington, Ky; Jon Yessin, California; and Ben Yessin, Lexington, Ky.

Humzey loved his ten grandchildren; Laura (Colin) Stevens, Suzanne (Kevin) Hoover, Jessica (Charlie) Hehman, Sarah Kurowski, Jon Kurowski, Mallory (Sterling) Hayden, Olivia Yessin, Quin Yessin, Holly Yessin and Sally Yessin.

Humzey is also survived by 4 great grandchildren; Hattie and Draper Stevens, Baxley Hoover and Oliver Hayden
