Hugh was a great musical leader as Principal Viola of the NCS and as conductor of the TYP orchestra. His work in founding the TYP organization has helped so many young musicians.

I'm very sorry to learn of Hugh's passing. He was a wonderful person, a great musician, and a fine colleague at UNC. I particularly cherish the memory of conducting Berlioz'
Harold in Italy with Hugh as soloist with the UNC Symphony Orchestra in 2003, and Hugh was kind to invite me to guest conduct the Triangle Youth Symphony in 2011. I also very much appreciated Hugh's confidence in my artistic judgement to have me as the adjudicator for the TYP Concerto Auditions for many years, an event that was always an amazing display of the high level of young talent that the Philharmonic Association and Hugh cultivated. I do wish that I could attend the memorial event, but unfortunately we will be out of town at that time. Hugh left an indelible impression on many generations of young musicians, greatly enriching the musical life of the Triangle, and his legacy will live on.

I'll be forever grateful to Hugh and Margaret for establishing the Philharmonic Association and seeing that jazz could be part of their mission in music education. I'm sorry I can't be at the memorial service to celebrate him and all of his accomplishments.

I will always be grateful for the impact Mr. Partridge had on my sons life. More than a director but someone for him to look up to, respect. I’m so sorry to hear of Mr. Partridges passing. He is someone who made a difference in the world, sharing his talent and patience teaching young musicians. Sending prayer to Martha, his sons and extended family. He will be missed.

I’m forever grateful to Hugh Partridge for being an amazing role model and viola teacher for my young son Dominick. I never thought a 30-veteran of the North Carolina Symphony would take an active interest in my son, and yet, there was Hugh, available to teach him. Hugh used to tell Dominick he had to “go to the woodshed” to practice what he’d learned in his viola lesson. Those lessons paid off as Dominick later grew to understand exactly what he meant. Dominick is still pursuing his viola dreams and a great deal of credit goes to the incredible Hugh Partridge. Thank you Hugh from the bottom of my heart.
Margaret, my deepest condolences. He indeed lived a beautiful music-filled life.
