Hubert's obituary

Hubert Edward Napier, age 64, departed this world on the evening of December 24, 2023. He was surrounded by loved ones until the moment he passed.

He is predeceased by his father Robert Lee Napier, his brother Gary Dale Napier, and his sister Carolyn Sue Reagan. He is survived by his mother Barbara Jean Scarborough Napier, his four daughters Melissa Meador, Jacqueline Guillory, Lindsay Napier, and Courtney Napier, his siblings Dorothy Morris, Robert Lee Napier Jr, Alex Napier, and Teresa Gail Highnote. Also left behind are eleven grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, his ex-wife Julie Napier, his cat and best friend Tom, and countless friends whom he loved like family.

Born on July 4, 1959 in Harlan, Kentucky, Hubert grew up in a large family that was full of love. He often recounted stories of his childhood growing up in the mountains of Kentucky alongside his brothers and sisters. When he was young, his family moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he spent many years and made a lasting impression on so many there. In 1994, he moved to Macon, Georgia with his family where he stayed for a number of years before eventually returning to his home of Kentucky and finding the beautiful property that he would come to call his “soulmate” in Williamstown where he lived until his final days.

To know Hubert was to love him. He never met a stranger and would go out of his way to help others before ever considering helping himself and often made personal sacrifices to help the ones he loved. His neighbors recounted tales of Hubert coming to lend a hand at a moment’s notice no matter how large or small the task at hand. He was a fierce friend to everyone he met and his infectious laugh could fill up a room and instantly bring a smile to another’s face.

He cared deeply for the land and felt the most at home and at peace camping or just being out in nature, a trait which he has passed on to his daughters. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time down by lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. He would often be found working on his property tending his garden and chickens, putting out corn for the family of deer who lived nearby, walking along his pond by the light of a full moon or a fire with his cat, Tom, closely by his side, or sitting on his porch drinking a coffee watching the rain come down over the hills. He was a devout Christian who followed the Baptist faith and would often sit in his quaint cabin with his friend and neighbor, Ricky, studying the Bible late into the evening.

One cannot speak about Hubert without acknowledging his incredible work ethic and sharp intellect. Friends and family often spoke with awe of Hubert’s accomplishments and his innate ability to quickly pick up a skill, oftentimes self taught, and rapidly excel at it. His nephew, Michael, spoke of how “you could start him as a lowest level job on a Monday and by Friday, he would be running the job.” There was not a thing he could not teach himself to do. He spent his early career working for Plant Scherer and Georgia Power where he excelled, but the majority of his career was spent working in the construction industry doing contracting work and welding. Hubert was always proud of what he could accomplish. He loved taking tired, broken things and making them new and beautiful again, be it a house, a thrifted knick-knack, or a person.

Hubert will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. While he may be gone from this world, his memory will be indelibly pressed upon all who knew him. He will be remembered by his deep appreciation for nature, his love of God, his relentless work ethic, and his devotion to friends and family. His presence will be felt in each drop of rain, in the cool mountain rivers, in the light of the moon, and in the hearts of those who loved him.
