Herminia's obituary

Herminia Karp (AKA Mommom) had a dinner reservation with God on October 31, 2023. She departed at 12:50 PM, allowing herself plenty of time to reunite with those who preceded her as well as to spruce up into her Sunday best. Always prompt and meticulously primped, she would have no less for her King. She had been preparing for this moment her entire life and had recently began preparing those that loved her.

Herminia was born on January 10, 1941, in Bristol, Pennsylvania to parents Raymond and Anna Karp. She would often share stories about the neighborhood kids and some mischievous activities. Of course, Herminia could only minimally oblige such behavior. During an unapproved expedition to get candy, she departed alone to rapidly return to her residence before being caught. Running along the railroad tracks to guide her direction in the dark, she knew she was getting close to her Farragut Avenue cul-de-sac home. So, she exited the tracks and abruptly ran right into a trash can, which sent her headfirst into the barrel! These cartoon-like episodes continued throughout Herminia’s life. Always taking them in stride, she had a knack for attracting or creating situations that would cause belly laughs and memories for a lifetime.

Shortly after graduating from Bristol High, Herminia began her career at 3M company. Her impact in the factory allowed her to experience various opportunities to include tester in the tape lab, data processer, computer room operator, and finally manager of various logistics in the shipping department. Her work ethic secured her gateway to return several times when she had briefly left the company to have babies and to open a luncheonette. The Big Dipper, her little corner restaurant, was a labor of love. While serving the standard northeast favorites (pizza, cheesesteak, and pork roll), the name was representative of the ice cream. She was before her time as an unexpected marketing expert with a galaxy like commercial on the radio and a huge ice cream cone costume for which the lucky employee of the day donned for sidewalk attention. Ultimately, Herminia retired from 3M company in 2000.

In 2001, Mommom took a leap of faith to leave the northeast and bring her big heart, quirks, and selflessness to Kansas. She dove into the lives of her grandchildren, not only being physically present at their activities and as their on-call babysitter, but also deeply into their minds, hearts, and souls. Her personal hobbies shifted from her previous physical ones to primarily crafty ones. Card making became a favorite and brought her so much joy because it allowed her to share reminders of love through happy-mail with others.

Herminia was an overcomer. She navigated a significant number of challenges by relying on two things: Her motto, “it’s a temporary situation”, and her faith. Her relationship with God never wavered. But it wasn’t until she found her church family at Olathe Wesleyan Church (OWC) that she found her community and home. Never was she so joyfully involved, embraced, ministered to, and allowed to use her true spiritual gifts in her own unique way. Her family is eternally grateful for OWC loving her over the past 10 years.

Herminia is survived by her loving children, Pete (Kathy) Hricko and Mimi Hricko, her adoring grandchildren, Jennifer Cullen, Preston Cullen, Joey (Lizzy) Vecchione, and Krystiana (Phillip) Prado, as well as her doting companion and sidekick Willow.

Anyone who knew Herminia is aware of her obsession with animals. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City in her honor.
