Herbert's obituary

Herbert Marshall Carl, age 77, loving husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully in Sun City West, AZ on September 18, 2023, with his wife and 3 children by his side.

Herb was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 13, 1946, to parents Leonard and Norma. Herb lived most of his life in Milwaukee attending and playing football at Riverside High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin after serving 2 years in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany as part of the nuclear weapons division. Herb married Barbara (Schmitz) in 1969 and was proud father to Steven, Michael, and Amy. He was a hard-working entrepreneur owning 7 “Crewel World” craft stores. After learning the ropes of the painting business from his dear friend and cousin Donny, he started Carl’s Painting Co. with his brother Patrick. When not working, Herb could be found at the little league baseball field coaching one of his sons’ many teams. Herb and Barb retired to Sun City West, AZ in 2003 where he enjoyed many years of friendship and fun in a great community.

Herb’s laid-back easy-going attitude and great sense of humor was loved by all. Despite his many recent health battles, he remained positive. He was the nicest, kindest man and did everything for his family. Herb and Barb loved traveling and cruising together. He loved history, reading non-fiction, watching, and discussing WI sports (Badgers, Brewers, Bucks & Packers), watching his grandkids play sports, playing cards (Bridge and Sheepshead) with friends, walking, investing, and listening to music. He enjoyed traveling back home to Milwaukee each summer to spend time with his children, siblings, cousins, and friends on Milwaukee’s east side.

Herb is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barb, three children: Steve (Jenny) of Waunakee, WI, Mike (Toni) of Barrington, IL, and Amy (Stephen Murray) of Arlington Heights, IL, and six grandchildren Alexa, Brian, Abby, Jack, Erik, & Ryan, as well as his siblings Lowell (Mary), Jill, Jane, and Patrick (Vicki). Herb is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Norma (Mattson) Carl, mother-in-law Margaret Schmitz, and brother-in-law Joe Radaj.

A celebration of life will be held at the Milwaukee Athletic Club Rooftop Terrace. 758 N. Broadway St. Milwaukee, WI on Monday October 2nd from 4-8pm.

A memorial service & reception will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, AZ on Monday October 9th at 12:00pm. All are welcome.
