Herbert's obituary
Herbert Lawrence Brown, 89, passed away on May 28, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn, Herb moved his young family to Long Island in 1969 and in his later years lived in Somers, NY while enjoying winters in Naples, FL.
Herb was raised in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. A renegade from the start, he chose the Yankees over the Dodgers. He was a spirited child, keeping his parents, Leonard and Dorothy Brown, on their toes. He served proudly in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany in the mid-to-late 1950’s. After returning home from the service, he attended Pace University where he received his degree and later earned his CPA, taking over the family business. He took great pride in his career and was a dedicated accountant to the very end, always eager to support his clients, even when his health began to fail.
He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, always quick to share his opinions (sometimes loudly). Regardless of whether you agreed with him or not, you always knew his heart was in the right place. He was a long-suffering Jets fan, having been a season ticket holder from the team’s very inception, and he passes that legacy on to his children and grandchildren. In his later years, he spent joyful winters in Florida, where he was able to do what he loved, lay on the beach or at the pool and soak in the sun (and maybe play little golf). All who knew Herbie will never forget him and probably have a story to tell.
Herb is survived by his loving family, including his devoted wife of nearly 64 years, Shirley, as well as his three daughters, Jacqueline Mastrokyriakos, Elisa Zuckerberg, and Lauren Scher, and their respective spouses, Paul, David, and Daniel. He leaves behind five grandchildren who loved their grandpa, including Efthimios (Mike), Alexander, Jules, Gabriel, and Alison. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Brown, as well as his nephews and their respective families. As his family grew, he’d speak proudly of the “Brown Dynasty” that he built.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 12:00pm at King David Memorial Gardens (101 Mill Street, Putnam Valley, NY). All attendees are welcome to join the family immediately after the funeral in Waccabuc, NY. The family will also welcome guests for a sabbath and shiva service on Friday, May 31 at 5pm at the Waccabuc address. Email elisa@zuckerberg.info for the address. Donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center at https://www.mskcc.org/.
