Henry's obituary

Henry Richard Gally, age 90, of Elizabethtown, PA, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at Elizabethtown Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. He was born on February 18, 1931 in Lafayette Hill, PA, son of the late Albert E Gally and Helen M (Hess) Gally.

He was a son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. Henry is survived by his loving bride of nearly seventy years, Martha Sue (Ardell), his son Robin and his wife Roxanne (Cazier) Gally of Cresco, PA, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law, Roberta Gally.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Albert E Gally Jr. (2003) and his eldest son, Stephen R Gally (2004).

Above all else, Henry was the most loyal, faithful, compassionate, and dedicated husband to his wife, Martha Sue. In retirement, he and his wife moved to Paradise Falls Lutheran Association in Cresco, PA where they renovated a small summer cottage that had been in his wife’s family since the early 1900s and turned it into their fulltime home. From there, Henry and Martha spent the majority of their time traveling, visiting friends all around the country as part of the Holiday Rambler Club, and staying warm in Florida through the winters. In 2004, they were very happy to relocate to the Elizabethtown Masonic Village. Henry also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching the waves beside his wife in his favorite vacation spots, Myrtle Beach, SC and Moody Beach, ME.

When asked recently what he enjoyed most about life he said, “the past seven decades with my wife, and I look forward to no less than twenty more.”

He lived by the words “We should never forget yesterday, but more importantly, live today, for it is but tomorrow’s memory.”

His smile and laugh will be missed by his family and friends.

Career & Achievements

Graduating from Springfield High School in 1950, he started his career with humble beginnings purchasing a dump truck at the age of fourteen to start his own rubbish collection business in Whitemarsh Township, PA, before selling it back to the township at age 18 and joining the Navy. After serving, his career was spent working in various locations for E. J. Lavino and Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation, including various positions such as Plant Manager and Manager of U.S. Environmental and Regulatory affairs. He once took a shot with coworkers at making it into the Guiness Book of World Records by making a 500-foot hoagie to celebrate a half-a-million manhours without a loss-time incident.

He lived in several locations, including: Lafayette Hill, PA; Crown Point, IN; Walnut Creek, CA; Belpre, OH; Mineral Wells, WV; Cresco, PA; and Elizabethtown, PA. While raising a family, he spent nights working to achieve a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Business/Industrial Management while attending classes at the Philadelphia Technical Institute, Temple University, Ursinus College, Ohio Christian College and Indiana University.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite; a devoted member of the church in each of the locations he lived; served four years in the United States Navy and four more years in the reserves; was Chairman of the board of Trustees for Fritz Lodge #420; President of Norristown Rotary Club; President of the Conshohocken Lion’s Club; Served on the Pennsylvania Olympic Committee; Chairman of the Paradise Lake and Stream Quality Monitoring Team; Member of Plymouth Township Growth and Recreation focus group; Chairman of the Paradise Valley Property Committee; served on the Board of Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lafayette Hill, PA; and Chairman of the Methodist Church Trustees in Crown Point, Indiana. He was also a President of Paradise Falls Lutheran Association in Paradise Falls, PA, and the Wagon Master for his Holiday Rambler Recreational Caravan group on several trips, including a three-month journey to Alaska. He spent his last years as a member of the MV Shriner Club, the High Twelve Club, and as Secretary of the Rooster Woodshop at the Elizabethtown Masonic Village.

One of his biggest goals in life was to leave the world a better place than he found it, and he achieved that.

With those he worked and played with, he was known to often say “We can, we will, we did.”
