Henry's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mr. Henry Filkins, on November 4, 2025. Born on November 30, 1950, Henry lived a full and rich life, touching the hearts of many with his playful, lifegiving, genuine, humble, faithful, creative and determined personality.

Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Gale Filkins, who he married in 1992. He was a devoted father to Lori Filkins and Chad Filkins, and a loving step-father to Jody Pullis, Brenda French, Lucas Oord, and Rachel Harvey. He was "Papaw" to 28 grandkids and an abundance of great-grandkids (still counting!) His presence is sorely missed by his adored dog, Goldie.

Henry was a dedicated member at Church of the Highlands: Riverchase Campus, a testimony to his faith and the joy he found in the company of his fellow believers. The community of Church of the Highlands: Riverchase held a special place in his heart where he loved to serve for many years. As a door greeter, Henry was the first and last smile people saw as they entered and exited the service through his door. He loved sharing coffee and donuts with friends on Sunday morning.

An enthusiast of a variety of recreational activities, Henry loved playing games such as Rummy and Sequence with his wife and grandkids, and spending his free time woodworking and fishing. Always up for visits to the lake, he enjoyed camping trips where he could relax in nature and do more fishing!

Always one to appreciate a good western, Henry was a huge fan of John Wayne movies and every Christmas grandkids remember "Christmas with the Duke" on Papaw's lap and enjoying the hand-painted train village he and grandma always set up. He devoted his heart and mind to the study of The Bible and sharing it's truths with others. In music, the Christian band, Mercy Me,  was  among his favorite artists. Their song, "I Can Only Imagine" along with Lauren Daigle's song, "You Say" spoke life and the love of the Lord into his spirit. He understood the forgiveness of God and lived in that knowledge, the songs bringing tears to his eyes.

Despite his hobbies and interests, the greatest joy in Henry's life was being among the people of God and sharing the love of Jesus wherever he went. His steadfast determination was an inspiration to all, always ready to face a challenge, and never giving up. Through his actions, he taught the important lesson of doing everything to the glory of God. His legacy of loving and caring for his family, and his desire to share the joy and peace he found in Jesus will continue to live on in their hearts.

A celebration of Henry's life will be held on November 29, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Church of the Highlands: Riverchase Campus (9013 Helena Rd., Pelham, AL 35124). We invite those who knew Henry to come and share their memories, finding comfort in the collective sharing of the laughter, joy, love and Jesus he brought into our lives.
