Helwig's obituary

Born January 23, 1940, in Venlo, Holland, and raised in Syracuse, NY, Helwig Frank Van Der Grinten passed away on December 21, 2024, at the age of 84. A fighter to the very end, Helwig miraculously survived a cardiac arrest the previous month, during which he fully coded for 29 minutes. His extraordinary resilience inspired all who knew him.

Helwig graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, in 1962 and earned a master’s degree in Ocean Engineering from the University of Washington. His distinguished maritime career spanned over 50 years, marked by pioneering achievements and exceptional leadership.

As the first in his class to obtain an unlimited Master’s license, Helwig assumed his first command at just 29 years old, serving as relief Master of the Research Vessel Thomas G. Thompson. Over 17 years, he served as Master aboard various advanced vessels, showcasing his expertise and innovation in the maritime field. He also worked in dual capacity as master and seismic party manager in marine seismic acquisition and was also certified as a Dynamic Positioning System Operator.

In 2012, Helwig was honored with the prestigious Golden Mariner Award in recognition of his 50 years of seagoing experience. The award celebrates alumni and graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy who exemplify its mission of preparing mariners for a career at sea in the Merchant Marine.

After retiring from the sea, Helwig brought his dedication and knowledge to Fort Bend Independent School District, serving as a substitute teacher for numerous high schools and middle schools across the district.

Helwig was also deeply involved in civic matters, dedicating himself to improving his community. Among his many contributions, he fought tirelessly to ban red-light cameras in his hometown of Sugar Land, Texas, and across the entire state, showcasing his commitment to justice and public safety.

A man of many talents, Helwig loved singing in the church choir and playing the piano and flute. His passion for music brought joy to many, and his drive extended into social progress. Since the 1970s, he was a thought leader advocating for greater involvement of women in the Navy, demonstrating his vision and commitment to equity and the pursuit of excellence.

Helwig is survived by his two brothers, Dirk Vandergrinten and Pete van der Grinten; his beloved wife, Rosana Van Der Grinten; his daughter and son-in-law, Roshel Van Der Grinten and Jose Santos Jr, and his grandson, Mateo Willem Santos. He was predeceased by his parents, Willem Jan van der Grinten and Gisela van der Grinten.

A memorial service will be held on January 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM Central at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Sugar Land, TX. A reception will follow at the church.
