Helga was a member of our Wednesday Volunteers at Neighbor to Neighbor (8:30 AM to 12:30 PM) we shared many stories & laughs as we unpacked and folder the donations. Helga was my team mate on folding & marking Sheets and shared the correct & easy way to fill the Duvets. Helga was outgoing and a joy to be with, filling our lives with so much happiness. Helga remembered I had a passion for Lighthouses & would always send me a postcard or something relating to Lighthouses, that I cherish. God Rest my NtN friend.

I first met Helga about 20 years ago. I had been working here a couple of weeks and needed a transparency. I was told to see  a woman, Helga Lose, in Editorial (Editorial occupied space in this building on 1 and 2……coincidentally, Helga is sitting now pretty much where she sat then). 
I found her and explained what I needed. She smiled and then told me NO! It took a while and I think I had to sign a document at least as long as the one I signed to refinance my house but she finally handed it over……it was at that point I knew I had made a friend.
Helga and I started working together about 2 years after that; what is now about 18 years. Frankly I forget how it all happened. All I can remember is that one day Helga was up with me on the 5th floor. 
What I do remember is every morning when I arrived at work my desk would be rearranged. Those of you who have been to my office know that my desk does not need any rearranging…….what it generally needs is a match and some kerosene, but no rearranging. In any case, it was apparent that there were some real differences between Helga and I. After we got over the desk organizing thing I realized that we were actually perfect together. 
Unless you work closely with Helga you will never get all the nuances that are uniquely her. On the one hand she calls ailing colleagues to check on their well being, collects money for the Daffodil drive and feeds the birds out in back at 6 East and gives blood regularly. 
On the other hand she can be ruthless, especially with vendors. Most memos began with “You will…….” As if it were an edict. Whatever it was she was asking, it was plain as the nose on your face that it was not optional. Once I figured this out I used it to my advantage and I would routinely and subtly threaten slacking vendors by subtly suggesting that if they were having trouble with whatever problem was before us, that possibly Helga could be of assistance in helping them in some fashion. Before the conversation was finished the fax machine was ringing with what we needed. At other times Helga would recount to me her conquests…….someone 44¢ off on a $6,000 invoice; not a chance, paper inventory not jiving; who were they trying to kid? Nobody put anything over on Helga. Her gift to me are files that go back the whole 18 years just in case our cagy vendors think they’ll be pulling any wool over my eyes!
If Helga had to track someone or something down there was no stopping her. Helga is an avid bird watcher and I remember once her telling me how she found owls in Central Park. She told me you look down for a small pile of bones and skin and then look up……chances are there’s your owl. I believe she employed the same tracking methods to find some curators…..names will be withheld.
Besides losing a great coworker, I’m losing a personal trainer. I think everyone in this room has seen Helga zip by on one occasion or another. We would have to go the Main building to look at something and, out of the gate, Helga would be way ahead of me. I always feared she was going to run out into traffic. She would bound up the front stairs in a skirt and pumps while I trailed behind her. I’d catch up inside the front door and point meekly to the escalator. What I got was a look that was a mixture of pity and disgust then she would bolt up the Great Stair with me in pursuit. I think I was in the best shape of my life when we worked on the 5th floor. Between those stairs and our usual 3 to 5 trips a day across the street I was ready for the marathon. Now I find myself contemplating a gym membership. 
Retirement is somewhat of a misnomer when applied to Helga. Just yesterday she asked me about what cell phone to use in Europe? Hmmmm. For all the years I’ve known she and her sister Renata always played host to a myriad of out of town…..way out of town, visitors. I always thought that was a great inconvenience and told her she should charge then. When I asked Helga where she would stay when they traveled she just smiled and said “with all the people who stayed with us over the years”. Then there is the hiking out at her other sister’s place in California, bird watching in Connecticut, the opera, the theatre, the symphony and a host of other activities. In fact, it’s the way life should be lived. 
The bottom line though is that I know Helga will miss this place; as crazy as it sometimes is, the fact that people stick it out for 10, 20, 30 years and more says a lot about both the people and the institution and the relationship that bonds them. Helga has made her work here a very high priority in her life and made a real difference here. I have to say that I admire her for having the courage to leave what she loves for a new adventure. I’m sure that all of us in this room wish all the best for Helga and I, for one, look forward to her dropping in once in a while and regaling us with accounts of her adventures.
It is said that nobody is irreplaceable, and that can be debated, but it is an unequivocal truth that some people will be misselga is one of them.

Your loss is terribly painful.In the coming days you will feel the emptiness and void Helga left you with.What good memories she left all of us with!You need patience, faith and stoicism to overcome your grief, and you have all of that.You have also us, all your friends who are here for you when needed.

It seems that death is hovering around . Yesterday the 19th I lost a nephew, My brother's son passed. He was 42. He went to bed the night before.Next morning his mother found him dead in his bed.

Death is nothing but an episode, the liberation of the soul from the body and a travel in the unknown.

May be Helga is watching . I am sure she misses us as much we miss her.

Helga lived a life with the understanding that to give is to receive - and that is wonderfully reflected in the fullness of hers - from seeing live the Beatles 1st U.S. performance in her 20's- to hiking the Tyrolean Dolomites in her 80's...she always had an amazing positive energy in all she did. Along with thoughts and giving for and to others.

What a legacy....and lesson. Carry on. And Renata likewise.
