In Loving Memory of Helena Monteiro Sousa Lopes
Helena Monteiro Sousa Lopes, beloved mother, sister, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully at Rosedale Hospice in Calgary, AB, on October 19, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with ALS.
Born in the beautiful town of Guarda, Portugal, to Afonso and Maria Pereira, Helena grew up surrounded by the warmth of family and a love for nature. She was a devoted sister to Jorge, João, Prazeres, and Miguel, always finding joy in the bond they shared.
Helena was an active member of the Portuguese Club, where her spirit and dedication shone as a cornerstone of the organizing committee. She was happiest in her garden, tending to her plants, and at home, where she lovingly baked bread that filled the air with a warming aroma.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Antonio, and leaves behind her adoring daughter, Kaitlyn, who will carry forward her mother’s love of life, strength, and gentle care for others.
In her final years, Helena faced her diagnosis with remarkable courage and resilience. Her quiet strength through the progression of her illness inspired all who knew her, showing us the profound grace with which she embraced life, even in the face of hardship. Helena’s battle with ALS did not diminish her spirit, but rather, revealed the depths of her unwavering love, patience, and inner peace.
Helena will be remembered for her generosity, her love of community, and her quiet strength in the face of adversity.
A private wake will be held. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium, located at 3220 4 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2M3A5.
