Helen Julia VanHouten was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on 1 June 1927. Katharine Findley VanHouten, her mother, lived in Lenox, Iowa, but she trusted the doctor in Indianapolis to deliver her children because he had saved her life when treating her overactive thyroid.
