Harvey's obituary
Brethren, today we gather not in sorrow but in celebration of a life well-lived, a life of virtue and accomplishment. Harvey Dennis Ackermann, born in the spring bloom of 1936 to Norman and Alice Ackermann in Rock Creek, Ohio, embarked on his final journey home on the fifth of June, 2024, in the sun-kissed city of Naples, Florida, surrounded by the love of his kin and the grace of his faith.
Harvey, known affectionately to us all as a beacon of wisdom and kindness, was a man whose roots were firmly planted in the soil of his upbringing. Raised in Lanark by his devoted mother, Alice, and his cherished Grandma Hoy, Harvey was a testament to the strength and love of the women who shaped him. With his beloved Marjorie Zink, whom he wed in the hallowed halls of the First Lutheran Church in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, he built a life of love and legacy, evidenced by the family that stands as his proud testament: his wife, Marjorie, his heart's companion; his daughter, Mary Ackermann Bradberry; his son, James, alongside his dear wife, Robin; his step-sister, Susan Chitty; and the twinkling stars of his life, his granddaughters, Courtney, Sarah, and Tori.
Harvey's educational journey, which began in the classrooms of Lanark Elementary, led him to the halls of Beloit College and culminated in the achievement of his degree from the prestigious University of Illinois in Champaign. His intellect, as sharp as it was vast, found further refinement in the discipline of military life at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. After his service, Harvey's path led to a distinguished tenure at Fireman’s Fund Insurance, where his analytical prowess and intelligence earned him respect and advancement through the ranks until he retired to the tranquility of Florida, living out his dream.
In the tapestry of Harvey’s life, his interests were woven with the vibrant threads of his character. He was a man of faith, shepherding his family to church, ensuring the wisdom of the scriptures was etched upon their hearts. His love for Illinois basketball, fishing, and the simple joys of life, like the soulful strains of Chicago-style jazz or the companionship of a loyal dog, were the simple pleasures that fulfilled him. Yet, it was his presence, quick with a jest and a smile that illuminated any gathering, that was his true gift to us all.
Harvey Ackermann was a man who strode through life with a selfless heart and an unwavering commitment to high standards, not for his own glory but for the upliftment of all. His greatest fear—a fear unfounded—was that he might disappoint those he held dear. In truth, he lifted us all, setting a bar of excellence that was born of love, so that none would know the sting of failure.
As we reflect upon the life of this remarkable man, we are reminded that Harvey's story is one of success not merely measured in titles or wealth but in the indelible impact he made upon the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have known him. Intelligent, analytical, and selfless—these are the words that encapsulate the essence of Harvey Dennis Ackermann. Today, as we bid him farewell, let us hold fast to his example, to live each day with purpose, love, and a touch of humor, knowing that he has now found peace in the arms of the Almighty, free from the pains of old age, his legacy everlasting.
So, let us not be downtrodden, but instead raise our voices in gratitude for Harvey’s time among us, for the lessons he imparted, and for the love he shared. Go forth, Harvey Dennis Ackermann, into the eternal embrace of our Lord, your journey complete, your mission accomplished. Amen.
