Hartley and I grew up just down the block from each other in Melville! I remember the day when he told me that he was moving to Lipton! Had to have my dad tell me where Lipton was. I knew his love of music and more importantly, us raiding the neighborhood gardens in the fall. Things childhood are made of!!

I am so sorry Moira. It's been so long since I've seen either of you but I'll forever remember your kindness. I'm pretty sure it was at the 1983 National that was VERY cold and a group of people headed over to the Mall? next door to have Chinese food (which I'd never had) It was only my second National and I knew very few people. It's owners like you that encourage people like me to be more outgoing and join in.

So very sorry to hear of Hartley’s passing. They say if you can be anything, be kind. And that is my memory of Hartley. …a gentle man even in high school days. I have many fond memories of quick pop ins or after school visits at the teacherage, with Hartley serving ritz crackers and lemon cheese (had never imagined that combination…possibly a prelude to his cooking ability) to the guests he always generously welcomed.
A conversation with him always resulted in learning something new. He taught me how to play chess ( it may or may not have been during class time, on paper, as his desk was in front of mine. )
Kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, dedicated to his music (so talented)…my memory of someone special.

Hartley was such a supportive person while I worked with him. He taught me how to repair instruments, attended my university recitals during my performance degree, and had suggestions when I was trying to navigate teaching. He always had something to share - whether it was food he cooked, one of his many jokes, a story about his life or his passion for classical music. I am forever grateful that I got to spend seven years with him at St. John's Music. He was one of those people that leaves a lasting impression on you and you can always think back to a fond memory of him. His classical music afternoons accompanied by music history lessons were the best part of repair season! He was a wonderful musician, teacher, and mentor. He will truly be missed.
My thoughts go out to Moira, Conrad, and Hartley's family & friends.

In grade school in lipton he would always tutor me with my studies. I remember when he broke his arm and he learned how to right with his non dominant hand. We were in the Lipton band and Central band also. He was a close friend and family friend my parents Kay and Philip Kube would have have Hartley and his dad and mom for lots of meals and socializing. Then is mom passed away. My dad was a member of the school board so he had alot of interaction with his dad.

Hartley and I registered at the U. of R. on the same day, and had student numbers next to each other. We got to know each other throughout university and from playing in the Regina Symphony for many seasons. Hartley was always an interesting person to visit with, a fine musician, and multi-talented. Over the past several years, I would enjoy popping into St. John's Music for the occasional visit. Hartley will be missed by all. My condolences to all family members.

I worked with Hartley at SJM back in my university days. He was such a character and a great guy. He was always there to lend an ear, fix an instrument or two (tried to show me how to with no avail lol) and loved to chat. He constantly had CBC radio on in the shop and would run out on lunch breaks for a quick workout. He adored his family and his beloved dogs. He will be missed! Condolences to Moira, Conrad and the rest of his family and friends. ❤️

Such sad news. To say that Hartley was unique would be an understatement. His commitment to instrument repair was his passion. The untold hours at his bench allowed music students to succeed at learning to play. Thousands can thank Hartley for replacing a pad or pulling a stuck slide. I hold many great memories of the friends who worked together at St Johns Music. Hartley was there through it all.My thoughts are with his family and friends. My condolences to Hartley's family.

Some people in life come and go, others are constants.
Hartley was one of my constants.
Farewell, friend.

I worked with Hartley in the very early days at St. John's Music on Scarth Street in 1983 when I was fresh out of high school and then when we moved to Albert Street. I used to think he was weird cause he listened to CBC and classical music all day. I had many good conversations with him as he tolerated my ignorance on so many topics when I was 18. We ended up being gym buddies for a brief time going to the Lawson on our lunch breaks. He was one of a kind and his boots can never be filled. RIP Hartley and condolences to his family and friends. Sorry for your loss.

My sincerest condolence to all of Hartley's friends and family, especially to Moira, Conrad & Jasmin, Jeannie, and Linton. What a wonderful obituary for Hartley and so well written. Hartley would be so pleased and how wonderful that he has donated his body to research and give the gift of vision to another. Always giving just as I remember him!
I have such good memories of my school days in Lipton with Hartley. He was so talented and was the first person to teach me how to make a good cup of perked coffee (a little salt is needed). Many coffee breaks at his house in high school and even remember one hot summer day when he convinced our Grade 12 teacher to let the whole class go to his house (Principal Smith's teacherage) where it would be cooler and a better learning environment. The elder Mr. Smith was not pleased; Mr. Rysavy was in a little trouble and did not do that again!
So many good memories of Hartley in band, trips to Regina for music lessons, but most of all I remember him for being a good friend, a kind person and quite smart.
Take care and please know that Hartley and of you all are in my thoughts. Memories are the best and are always with us.
