Gene's obituary

Dr. Harold Eugene 'Gene' Gibbons, of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024. He was born on July 22, 1938, in Texarkana, Texas to Harold and Louise Gibbons.

He grew up in Texarkana and was a precocious child, always curious about the world around him.  His older sister, Barbara named him and despite being 10 years apart, they were extremely close.  Gene was instrumental in her children's lives, Ellen, Paula, and Vickie, treating them more like his own children, rather than nieces.

He attended and graduated from Arkansas High School in 1956 and went on to attain his undergraduate degree in education at Ouachita College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.  He then earned his masters degree from Oklahoma City University and received his doctorate of education from the University of Oklahoma in 1975,  an achievement reflecting his dedication to learning and his pursuit of knowledge.

Gene moved to Dallas where he met the love of his life, Mary Frances.  They were both working in the community college district and married just three months after their first meeting.  He loved and cared for Mary Frances until the last days of his life, always doing whatever he could to make sure she was happy, healthy, and content.

He was an educator at heart and cared deeply about his students and staff within the Dallas County Community College District. He dedicated his time and services as an administrator at Eastfield College, Mountain View College and was instrumental in opening Brookhaven College where he held various positions for more than 20 years. He was a calming presence, bringing levity to all kinds of situations.

Gene was a creative soul with a talent for cooking, he would often create extraordinary recipes on a whim, much to the delight of those fortunate enough to taste his culinary creations. He was a lover of New York City and enjoyed many trips there with his family over the years.  Yet, among his favorite pastimes, he found the most joy in the company of his beloved children and grandchildren. He was instrumental in all of their lives, guiding their education, giving incredible counsel, and showering them with love. Their presence was the highlight of his life, a source of endless pleasure, and an affirmation of his legacy.

Known for being witty, kind, and thoughtful, Gene touched the lives of many. He was accepting of everyone, demonstrating a open-mindedness that was truly refreshing.  He was a great conversationalist.  He offered guidance to anyone in need, never hesitating to share his insights no matter the topic, in order to help someone.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Gibbons of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Ronda (Mark) White of Draper, Utah and their son, Jaxon Gates White;  Dr. Wells (Matthew) Housson of Dallas, Texas and their daughters, Elizabeth Brownlee Housson, Catherine Wells Housson, Anne Frances Housson and son, John Gibbons Housson, who will forever cherish his memory.

A service in honor of Gene will be held on December 19, 2024, at 1:00 PM at St. Rita Catholic Community, a place he cherished greatly due to his deep faith. A reception will immediately follow the mass on the St. Rita campus.

May his soul rest in peace. Gene Gibbons will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit lives on in the lessons he taught, the love he shared, and the lives he touched.
