Hal's obituary

Harold W Cail (59 years) went home to Jesus Friday Feb 5, 2021 following a long battle with a rare cancer, metastatic basel cell carcinoma.

Born in 1961 to Jim & Marilyn Cail, Hal was the youngest of 6 children. His early years were spent in Benin, West Africa where his parents served as pastoral missionaries with SIM International. Little red-headed Hal had a love for the local community, was fluent in Bariba / Batanou and could often be found working alongside the nationals in their gardens. He loved animals. His pets included a baboon and sometimes a snake or two.

In 1970 the family crossed the Sahara Desert in a Volkwagon van before settling in the Charlotte, NC area where Hal lived the remainder of his life. As a teenager and young adult, Hal wandered spiritually however in his early 30's he came back to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. His life was permanently changed. Hal lived his faith daily with honesty, fairness and integrity.

Over 26 years ago Hal married Martha Payne. They settled in Waxhaw, build the family home and raised their children surrounded by extended family. Over the years Hal worked in a variety of trades within the housing industry. His wife describes him as "a jack of all trades and master of most."

The latter years of his life were marred by metastatic basal cell carcinoma, a rare form of cancer with a short prognosis. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Atlanta handled the majority of his care. He participated in several clinical trials or newly released drugs. Hal's case contributed greatly to much needed research of this disease. Leaning on his faith, Hal knew God could wipe away the cancer at any time yet he also knew "my thoughts are not your thoughts". God has a bigger plan that we don't necessarily understand but we can still trust Him to bring glory to Himself no matter the future. With this simple faith he lived 14 years with cancer, far beyond the 9-36 months that is statistically normal for this disease. He used to say, "God is good all the time. All the time God is good."

The majority of these years he kept working full time in a physically demanding career as a plumber, The last months of Hal's life were at home under the care of hospice. He was surrounded by family and those he loved.

Hal joins his father, James Nelson Cail. He is survived by his mother Marilyn Cail, his wife Martha and sons Nathan G Cail, Captain C. Ryan Cail with wife Katie and daughter Addison, H. James Cail, Phillip K Cail and one daughter Myrna H Cail.
