Hanumanthaiya's obituary

Hanumanthaiya ("Hanuman") Marur, of Flint, Michigan, age 82, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2022.  Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 13 at Rossell Funeral Home in Flushing, Michigan.  Visitation will begin at 4pm followed by services at 5pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rotary International.

Hanumanthaiya was born in the village of Marur, located near Bangalore, Karnataka, India, on November 23, 1939.  He was the son of Sri Doddahanumanthaiah and Smt Kempamma.

Coming from a humble farming background, and as the very first member of his family to pursue higher education, Hanuman graduated from Bangalore Engineering College in 1964, with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and taught briefly at the R.V. Engineering College in Bangalore, India.  He went on to complete his Master's Degree in Engineering at Michigan State University in 1967, which brought him to America.  Shortly thereafter, he moved to Flint to begin his career, first working for the Kraft Engineering firm, followed by a tenure as township engineer for Genesee Township, and then opening his own firm, Trans Environmental Engineers, in 1979.  That same year he returned to his birthplace and built a small hospital, the first medical care facility near his village.  Seven years later, he returned to his village to build a new primary school.  Throughout this time, he also built his business, helped build the Paschima Kasi Sri Vishwanath Temple in Flint Township, and became an active member of the Rotary Club of Flint, Michigan, working on multiple service projects in India and other countries on behalf of Rotary International.  He was also heavily involved with Pampa Kannada Koota Michigan, the International Institute of Flint, as well as being a founding member of the India Club of Flint.  Hanuman also completed many service projects for ISKCON (India), the Adi Chunchanagiri Mutt (India), and World Medical Relief (Michigan).  He was also on the organizing committee for the Council of Hindu Temples North America.   Hanumanthaiya Marur will always be known for his constant service to the community.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lalitha, his sons Suri (Shanthi) Marur and Ravi (Sushma) Marur; and grandchildren, Shika, Surya, Siddharth, and Akhil.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
