Hank's obituary

Henry Vivian Bailey III (Hank) passed away peacefully on March 1, 2022 after a year-long battle with neuroendocrine tumor cancer. Hank was a caring father, Pops, brother and friend. He was at home surrounded by family who lovingly comforted him as he transitioned to his next great adventure.

His lifetime of adventure began on May 2, 1949 in Nuremberg, Germany where he was born to Valarie Bailey and Henry Vivian Bailey Jr., who was stationed in Germany with the United States Armed Forces. Upon returning to the United States, Hank grew up in the Washington D.C. area and Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from GMA/Woodward Academy and the College of North Georgia, Hank entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant.

Hank moved to Marietta, Georgia to raise his four children in East Cobb's Princeton Walk neighborhood and became an active member of the community. He owned A Perfect Party and A Costume Ball for many years. Hank found great joy as a small business owner interacting with neighbors and working alongside friends and family. Most of all, Hank was a dedicated father to all four of his children. Any spare time was spent playing with the kids in the front yard or cheering them on from the sidelines. He lived for watching and videotaping their sports games.

Hank loved international travel and was always ready to embark on the next exciting adventure.  He had a great fondness for the West, particularly Montana or as Hank called it "God's country". Hank often recruited friends and family on his travels out West; everyone always returning with stories of astounding adventures of being far out of their comfort zone yet having a profound life-changing impact on them. Hank believed there was always a better fishing lake or river right around the corner-  this perpetual optimism pushed everyone around him to be a little more adventurous and they were all the better for it. Hank was a gifted storyteller and had a lifelong passion for history, particularly world wars and early western explorers such as Lewis and Clark.

Hank was truly one of a kind. His big heart, warm smile and contagious laughter will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Family was everything to him and he would say his biggest achievements were his four children: Brooke, Lauren, Myles and Carson. He often spoke of “the deal he made with God” while being treated for a rare lung condition that nearly took his life in 1987. His wish was to live long enough to see his kids graduate from high school. He knew every day after walking out of the hospital was a gift and it made him so grateful for the time with his kids and grandchildren. Hank was a kid at heart and enjoyed the simple things in life: a beautiful morning, fishing, hunting, good BBQ, watching sports with friends, and making his grandkids smile. In memory of Hank, may we all be a little more adventurous.

Hank was preceded in death by his mother Mable Valarie Bailey and his father Henry V. Bailey, Jr. He is survived by his brother Tom (Lynda) Bailey; his four children Brooke Bailey, Lauren (Steever) Flannigan; Myles (Katie) Bailey, and Carson (Sammi) Bailey.
