Gwendolyn's obituary
Reflections of a Beautiful Life
Gwendolyn Moore went home to begin her ETERNAL life with God on July 9th, 2023 at age 68. Gwendolyn (affectionately known as “Gwen”) was born to Ida Mae Moore and Ertis Moore on June 17th, 1955 in Los Angeles, California. As a child, Gwen was quiet, enjoyed her own company and liked playing with baby dolls her mother would bring her from her job at Mattel.
In 1974, Gwen met her husband, Olukayode Shokunbi, in Los Angeles at the most romantic place imaginable–in their apartment building’s laundry room. After a long drive in their “pinto” to Las Vegas, they married in 1976 and went on to proudly have 4 children, Falilat, Basirat, Halidu, and Kafayat. Gwen attended New Mexico State University where she earned a degree in administration. While married, Gwen lived in Los Angeles, California, Abeokuta, Nigeria, and Chicago before settling in a Chicago suburb, Matteson, Illinois. She worked the majority of her career at St. James Hospital as a registrar for over 18 years before retiring in 2020.
Throughout her adult life, Gwen had many passions and interests including gardening and sewing. Although Gwen lived a large portion of her life in Chicagoland, she was still a Cali girl at heart. This was evident by her absolute love for swimming and the beach…any beach…even Lake Michigan! However, the activities she loved the most were twofold: studying God's word and praying to him…daily, without fail. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. How did she share it?--by LIVING God’s word and letting the Holy Spirit do the rest.
Gwen joins both her parents, and brother, Eric Moore in Heaven. She leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Falilat Boyd, Basirat Shokunbi, Halidu Shokunbi, Kafayat Shokunbi, two grandsons, Jayson Boyd and Jaxson Boyd (Chicago, IL), siblings, Rickey Moore (Shreveport, LA) Marsha Melancon (Haughton, LA), Curtis Moore (Fresno, CA), Rodney Brown (Haughton, LA), daughter-in-law, Kyla Shokunbi, prayer partner and friend, Rosalyne Gardiner (Los Angeles, CA) and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Now that Gwen has passed into the arms of our Lord, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of Gwen’s physical life on Earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for her in heaven.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. -John 11:25-26
