Gwendolyn's obituary
We remember the life of Mrs. Gwendolyn Bell, who was born on February 5, 1947, and passed away on December 25, 2023. Gwendolyn was a beloved wife to Lorenzo Sr Bell, and a cherished mother to Lorenzo Jr Bell “Peanut”, Lisa Goodson (Floyd), Lindsay Bell, and Leslie Bell. Gwendolyn's memory will continue to be carried on in the hearts of her grandchildren; Paij Clark, Danielle Scott (Ernest), Brooke Bell, Chase Bell, Jade Bell, and Joshua Goodson as well as her great-grandchildren; Braniah Mason, Eian McDaniel, Asher Scott and Braxton Walton-Clark. Gwendolyn is also survived by her sisters, Vivian Bailey and Verona Webb, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her life was sadly marked by the loss of her daughter Leslie Bell, her parents Carrie Vaughn and Oliver Turnipseed, and her siblings Oliver Vaughn, Sedora Vaughn, Sonja Vaughn, and Melvin Oliver.
Gwendolyn held an unwavering commitment to learning - a love she inherited from her mother who worked in a school. She loved to read. She began her education in 1953 and graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar Sr. High School in 1965. This was also the year she embraced the joys of motherhood and married her lifetime partner, Lorenzo Sr Bell. She attended nursing school and was a licensed practical nurse. Her love for learning led her to also attend 2 years at Coppin State College.
A hard-working woman, Gwendolyn began her bright career as a nurse in 1973. She held positions at Sinai and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland. She relocated to Milwaukee, WI in 1981 where she began caring for children and. Her love for children and the birth of her granddaughter guided her to open Hug-A-Bear Daycare Center where she poured love and dedication until her retirement in 2012. In 2012 Gwendolyn and her soul mate moved to Atlanta Georgia to enjoy retirement.
Gwendolyn began her relationship with Christ at a young age while attending Memorial Baptist Church in Baltimore Maryland. Her dedication to her faith continued and was shared with many people including the members at Park Avenue Baptist Church in Atlanta Georgia.
Gwendolyn had a zest for life that was reflected in her varied hobbies. She loved crafts and sewing. Gwendolyn developed a great affection for fabrics and crafts, often equating her visits to Jo Ann Fabrics or Michael Craft store with a trip to an amusement park. In addition to reading and sewing, she loved to dance. She also enjoyed listening to music. Her most loved song was 'Wind Beneath My Wings' which she said reminded her of her children who lift her up and keep her soaring. She loved watching the Godfather movie because she enjoyed the acting. Her favorite foods reflected her upbringing. She adored seafood. She could eat seafood, especially crab and fish, every day. She loved both hot and cold teas, which drank daily. Ice cream was her guilty pleasure with strawberry being her utmost favorite. Her favorite vacation destination was any beach as it brought back fond childhood memories of vacations with her cousin and her Uncle June and Aunt Hillary.
Gwendolyn's legacy is her ability to love and be helpful. Her best lesson for us is to treat people the way you want to be treated. Her love for all children shaped her life, and she will be dearly missed by everyone who called her Granny.
