His dedication to service didn't end there; after completing a Masters of Arts in Education at Pepperdine University in 1974, he began teaching history, economics and theory of knowledge at the Vista Unified High School in 1982, where he taught until his second retirement in 2003. In his final year, he was named Teacher of the Year.
Gus was a man of simple pleasures with a strong desire for sharing his knowledge and experiences. His favorite foods were hearty staples like tacos, steak, and meatloaf, paired often with a refreshing Negro Modelo. His favorite tunes ran the gamut from Conway Twitty to the Irish Tenors.

One of Gus's enduring life lessons was a humorous nod to his hearty appetite as he often quipped at dinner: 'Are you done with that?'
Gus will be remembered by his loved ones and the community for his dedication, intelligence, humor, and kindness.
