Gus's obituary

Augustus "Gus" Tavis, born on July 28, 1937, passed away on December 21, 2024, leaving behind an impactful legacy of service, wisdom, and laughter. Gus was a beloved husband, father, and friend, known for his quick wit and captivating storytelling.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Trish Tavis;  his devoted children, Mike, Tricia, and Matt; his four grandsons, Nick, Joey, Cameron and Chase. Gus was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Mary Tavis.

Gus was a proud graduate of Seton Hall University, where he completed his studies in 1959. Following his graduation, Gus served in the United States Marine Corps, a career he embarked on in 1961 and honorably retired from in 1981.  His dedication to service didn't end there; after completing a Masters of Arts in Education at Pepperdine University in 1974, he began teaching history, economics and theory of knowledge at the Vista Unified High School in 1982, where he taught until his second retirement in 2003.  In his final year, he was named Teacher of the Year.

Gus was a man of simple pleasures with a strong desire for sharing his knowledge and experiences. His favorite foods were hearty staples like tacos, steak, and meatloaf, paired often with a refreshing Negro Modelo. His favorite tunes ran the gamut from Conway Twitty to the Irish Tenors.

His interest in history and passion for learning often culminated in extended discussions about the world, a testament to his intellectual curiosity and commitment to lifelong learning. Gus loved to travel and explore, with one of his favorite pastimes being cruising around the globe.

One of Gus's enduring life lessons was a humorous nod to his hearty appetite as he often quipped at dinner: 'Are you done with that?'

Gus will be remembered by his loved ones and the community for his dedication, intelligence, humor, and kindness.

Military interment to be at a later date at Tahoma National Cemetery in Washington.  Contact the family for more information.
