Gregory Otis Layman
Los Angeles resident Gregory Otis Layman passed away Thursday morning, April 11, 2024 on his sailboat after a sudden heart attack. A visitation, mass, and rosary will be held on Monday, April 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Cemetery & Mortuary in Rowland Heights, California.
Greg was born November 14, 1963 in West Covina, California. He was one of four children to Paul Edward and Alice Shirley Layman. He attended Damian High School in La Verne and is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Nursing and Mount San Antonio Community College. Greg lived in West Covina, La Verne, Long Beach, and San Pedro, California. He was a well respected first responder with a gifted character. He was a loving friend, brother, uncle, son, and father.
Greg was a clever, fun and loving person who enjoyed sailing, barbecuing for his friends and family, and had a dedication to his career. He lived aboard his 1995 Hunter Sailboat at Lighthouse Yacht Marina in the Port of Los Angeles. He served many hospitals in Los Angeles County as a mass casualty communicator, paramedic, nurse, and EMT. Greg was recognized and always appreciated for his service, especially in crises throughout his years as a first responder.
He is survived by his sons, Luke Layman of Anchorage, Alaska, and Zachery Layman, stationed in Camp Pendleton, California; father Paul Layman of La Verne; brothers and sister Michael (and Leslie) Layman of Cle Elum, Washington, Jeffrey (and Fumiyo) Layman of Washington, DC, Diane (and Tim) Warren of Camus, Washington, living in La Paz, Bolivia; and nieces and nephews Yuki and Louis Layman, Kevin (and Adrianna) Layman and Chelsea (and Brad) LaPlante, and Chloe and Nicholas Warren.
