Gregory's obituary
Gregory Joseph Day
October 12, 1966 – July 7, 2025
Gregory Joseph Day, born to Ronald D. Day and Darlene M. Day on October 12, 1966, peacefully passed away surrounded by his beloved family and the compassionate care team at Methodist CCU. His passing, marks the closing chapter of a life filled with quiet integrity, wholehearted service, and enduring love.
Though a man of few words, his actions spoke volumes. From his earliest days chasing after his older brothers and diving headfirst into youthful adventures, Greg cultivated a spirit of resilience, humor, and dedication to family. As the middle child in a lively household of six, he was both dependable and quietly protective, a steady anchor to his younger siblings throughout life.
On October 14, 2017, Greg married Kelly (Blackburn). Greg’s greatest joy came from being a father. He was endlessly proud of his children, Samual Addison, Mitchell Joseph, Tyler James, and Madison Lee. With them, he shared his love of deer hunting, fishing, and cooking, the same passions passed down from his father, Ron.
Weekends were spent side by side at the family cabin, fishing, tackling projects, or simply soaking in the quiet joys of nature. He treasured his time with Kelly’s parents, Elmer and Paula Blackburn, and especially the hours spent with Elmer restoring the family property, an act of love meant to last for generations. In July of 2023, his namesake, Raylan Gregory Day, was born. The title of Grandpa was one he cherished deeply.
Greg began his journey with the Hy-Vee corporation at the early age of 14, working as a bottle sorter in the back of the store. He continued part-time at the Indianola location through his high school graduation in 1985. Greg served Hy-Vee for more than 40 years, and throughout his career, he was able to serve in many roles throughout the store. While working in the meat department, after high school, Greg met Sheldon McVey, who would become his closest friend, a bonus brother. To his coworkers, Greg wasn’t just a manager; he was their “work dad,” a trusted presence with a warm smile and a helping hand. He truly embodied Hy-Vee’s motto: “A Helpful Smile in Every Aisle.”
After work, Greg found comfort relaxing on his deck or in his garage with a cold beverage and the music of his favorite artist, Sammy Hagar. The Red Rocker was a lifelong favorite, and Greg never missed a chance to see him live. Greg’s vast piggy bank collection included a 3 foot tall Incredible Hulk bank. His retro Bud Light billiard light added a bit of whimsy to their home. Greg also was very proud of his 8-point European mount proudly displayed on the basement wall. Each piece told a little part of his story.
Greg is survived by his mother, Darlene Day; his wife, Kelly; his children Sam (Jarrica) Day, Mitch (Sammy) Day, and Madison Day; stepson Tyler (Shea) Blackburn; grandson Raylan; and his in-laws Paula and Elmer Blackburn. He also leaves behind his siblings: Michael (Denise) Day, Lori (Dennis) Klug, Jennifer Day, Brian (Kristin) Day, sister-in-law Ann Day, and brother-in-law James Blackburn. His beloved nieces and nephews: Chelsea Everhart, Alyson (Rusty) Stark, Jacob Day, Abigail (Dylan) Cozad, Kate Day, Megan Neuroth, and Cason Day. And his great-nieces and nephews: Lola Stark, Sully Stark, Hugo Stark, Sylvie Stark, Waylon Cozad, and Leighton Cozad.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald D. Day, and his brother, David A. Day.
Greg’s life was defined not by accolades or attention, but by kindness, hard work, quiet generosity, and the deep love of his family.
“Hey, take me away
Come on, fly me away
Pick me up so high
Where eagles fly, oh yeah.”
