Gregory's obituary
Gregory was born in Tucson, Arizona on March 26th, 1952 to parents Billie Ann Bartoe and Dean Voight Rizer. Gregory’s stepfather since the age of 9, Joseph Edwin Bishop, adopted Gregory on August 22nd, 1967 at the age of 15. Gregory went to Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Arizona and graduated in 1970. Gregory was a skilled baseball player throughout his childhood. He lettered in varsity baseball in high school and went on to play fast pitch soft ball in the Navy. Gregory enlisted in the United States Navy in 1971. He served 22 years where he earned advancement to the highest enlisted rank of E-9 Master Chief Petty Officer within 17 years. He was selected Command Master Chief for the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-60) from 1988 to 1990. He was a leader and mentor to both enlisted and officers alike. Gregory's dedication to his service and his country resulted in various honors and awards including Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal as well as many other achievements.
Gregory had many hobbies including baseball and softball, water skiing and boating, bugging in the Florida Keys, roller skating and blading, playing the keyboard, building RC airplanes, woodworking, listening to music, and rescuing dogs. Gregory was well known for his ability to celebrate life. He loved to entertain and often had gatherings for sailors that were away from their families and friends. Gregory’s own family and friends can attest that his gatherings were memorable. They were well planned and he made great efforts to provide all with time to relax and enjoy. Gregory had a love for animals and was a devoted advocate for their well being. Gregory had two rescue dogs when he passed, Chloe and Tarson, which he deeply cared for and loved with all his heart.
Gregory was preceded in death by his son Gregory Alan Bishop, Jr. Gregory is survived by the mother of his children Lisa Ann Bishop, daughter Jodi Melisa Bishop, son Joseph Dail Bishop and daughter-in-law Julie Anne Bishop, grandson Kalob Alan Bishop, granddaughter-in-law Taylor Alexis McCoy, grandson-in-law Chancelor Dane Webster, sister Catherine Raitto, brother Philip Robin Bishop and sister-in-law Leslie Bishop, and his brother Brett Adam Bishop and sister-in-law Karen Bishop. Gregory will also be remembered by his many nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Memorial service and reception will be held at Pearson Park 200 Lakeview Parkway Red Oak, Texas 75154 on Saturday December 14th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
