Gregory's obituary
Gregory Winfield Avery was born in 1954 in Cranston, RI and passed away January 20, 2024 in Indian Rocks Beach, FL.
Greg was the son of Edwin Avery II and Evelyn Avery, brother of Shirley Avery Cicero and Dennis Avery, as well as the late Richard Avery, Catherine Holda, and Edwin Avery III.
As a youngster, Greg kept busy with fun activities. He boxed for CLCF in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, earning himself a reputation as a scrappy fighter. Greg played ice hockey in the winter on the weekends at Aqueduct and Blackamore ponds and street hockey in the fall at Eden Park with his brother. Greg could be seen pulling water skiers on one of the first family ski boats on Blackamore pond in the summer months of the 60’s.
Greg graduated from Cranston East in 1972. After growing up in Cranston, he ran an automotive repair shop on Broad Street which he operated for many years before moving the shop to Warren, RI. He created and ran a number of businesses in his life, as he had quite an entrepreneurial streak. Greg loved the ocean, and lived on board his boat for quite a while. He also loved to go on cruises and was able to enjoy many of them.
In the late 1990’s he relocated to the Tampa, FL area where he remained until his death. While Greg had no children of his own, he was the favorite uncle of many of his nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. He was deeply committed to his family and spent many hours in person and remotely offering his unique take on life and supporting them. He spent many hours at the beach which he loved, and every dog he met was never a stranger.
Greg was one of a kind, deeply loved, and will tremendously missed.
