Gregory's obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Todd Aubry on January 21, 2025, at the age of 66, in Memphis, TN. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Greg was a man of many passions; known for his adventurous spirit, fierce independence, and unwavering commitment to everything he pursued.
Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on January 23, 1958, Greg’s family eventually settled in Windsor, Ontario, where he spent his formative years. After a time in Victoria, where he studied, worked and travelled across the Rockies, Greg returned to Ontario, making Toronto his home. It was in Toronto that he began his career in broadcast media and sales, and it was also there that he met Angela on a blind date, leading to a 41-year marriage. His family grew to include two wonderful daughters, sons-in-law, four grandchildren, and his three dogs, Mattie, Charley, and Hugo.
Greg excelled at everything he did because he did it with passion, drive, and commitment. He was never passively interested and always dedicated himself to learning. He was a competitive swimmer who once swam across a lake at the age of 12, earning a spot in the local newspaper. He ran multiple marathons, including the Midnight Sun Marathon in Nanisivik, Baffin Island, in honour of Terry Fox, making him one of the first to take on the unique and remote challenge. He was also an accomplished wine collector, a music aficionado, an amateur chef and a food judge, always eager to explore new culinary horizons.
In retirement, Greg found a new calling as a competitive BBQ pitmaster, eventually competing to be a world champion and founding Aubry Bar-B-Que. His passion for barbecue was matched only by his devotion to the Canadian BBQ Society and the Kansas City BBQ Society, where he made lasting friendships and earned widespread respect in the BBQ community. One of the most memorable aspects of Greg’s approach to competition was his commitment to giving back. Whenever he placed, he chose to donate his winnings to the Ronald McDonald House, hoping to inspire other teams to follow suit and use their success to support those in need.
Greg was a captivating story teller and built lifelong friendships. His circle was wide and diverse, with an approach to friendship that was full of engagement and presence. His devotion was contagious, and his legacy lives on through the countless memories shared by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Greg is survived by his loving wife, Angela; his daughters Lauren Aubry (Bryan MacKinnon) and Kaitlyn Aubry (James Grundy), his grandchildren, Charlie, Penelope, George, and Reuben, and his dog, Hugo. He also leaves behind his brother, Kirk Aubry (Katie), and many cherished friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Gary Aubry, and his two dogs, Mattie and Charley.
