Gregg's obituary
Gregg Andrew Johnstone, loving son, brother, uncle and friend to many, passed away peacefully with family by his side at the age of 37 in Oshawa, Ontario on May 1, 2022. Gregg lost his brave and long battle with Alexander disease (a rare form of leukodystrophy) but not without leaving his mark on this world.
Gregg’s kind and indomitable spirit was well known by all who knew him, and his light will shine on in our memories. His persistence and optimism allowed him to accomplish a great deal in a short time, despite his declining health. He graduated with honours from a culinary program at Humber College, and enjoyed travelling and people watching. Gregg played hockey as a boy, and was always game to attempt a variety of sports, and obtained a first-degree black-belt in Tae-Kwon-Do.
Gregg loved animals and they loved him right back. During his time working at Windreach farm, he made many friends, of both the two and four-legged variety, and the work of caring for the animals gave Gregg a sense of peace and purpose.
He had a mischievous sense of humour, and just before his brother Adam’s wedding, he shaved his head almost bald; for his own graduation ceremony from Humber, he surprised everyone by dyeing his hair flaming red. He spent a great deal of time with his father and his ‘bad joke book’ and could often provide the punchline, or a well-timed ‘ha’, so you knew he was enjoying it!
In recent years as mobility became more difficult, he enjoyed crafting art projects and engaging in various physical activities at the Abilities Centre in Whitby, as well as at ThorntonView Long Term Care with the helpful support of his father, and caring staff members.
Gregg was predeceased by his loving mother, Elaine, and is survived by his father Terrance Johnstone, and brothers, Adam (Jennifer), Tim (Maureen), and nephews (Ewan, Wyatt, and Everett), and his favourite sweet pup Rosie.
Our family is grateful to know that Gregg is finally at peace.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster United Church on Saturday May 7 at 11 am, please indicate if you are attending here: https://everloved.com/life-of…
