Grace's obituary
Gracie Mentzer Wellman was born on September 27, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA, to Jay Fitzpatrick Mentzer, a welder, and Mabel Brubaker Mentzer, a school teacher. She pursued her love of learning, earning a bachelor's degree from Bridgewater College (VA) and a master’s in history from Shippensburg University (PA). For 30 years, she dedicated herself to teaching English and reading in Virginia Beach elementary schools, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
Grace met her husband, Philip Wellman, while he was serving in the military. During a weekend pass from Vietnam, they met in Honolulu, Hawaii, and tied the knot in a small chapel in 1969. Their marriage of 55 ½ years was filled with love, adventure, and laughter.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Grace was the heart of her family. Her children, Chad and J.J., describe her as a bright light—funny, lovable, beautiful, loyal, and a woman of deep faith. Always supportive and ready for an adventure, she filled every room with laughter.
Gracie embraced life fearlessly. Though she couldn’t swim, she eagerly went rafting and boating. She rode as a motorcycle passenger, trusting the journey despite having no control. She and Phil traveled relentlessly—coast to coast, over high mountain passes, from Alaska to Florida, and beyond. Whether camping, boating, skiing, or exploring international destinations, she instilled a sense of adventure in her children and cherished family reunions in Pennsylvania and Colorado.
Beyond her family, Grace was devoted to her community. She recently graduated from the Senior Citizen Police Academy in Virginia Beach and was passionate about giving back. She and Phil volunteered as drivers for Mama’s Dog Transport, helping rescue animals find loving homes. She was also active in Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, Gamma Pi, book club, and jazzercise.
Even in her passing, Grace's legacy of generosity lives on. In her honor, the Rotary Club of Florence, SC, has launched the Sharing Grace initiative. Each quarter, they will distribute healthy snacks to local law enforcement agencies as a token of appreciation for their service.
Gracie lived life to the fullest, bringing those around her along for the adventure. Those who knew her were truly lucky to have been part of her journey.
