Gracie Mentzer Wellman was born on September 27, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA, to Jay Fitzpatrick Mentzer, a welder, and Mabel Brubaker Mentzer, a school teacher. She pursued her love of learning, earning a bachelor's degree from Bridgewater College (VA) and a master’s in history from Shippensburg University (PA). For 30 years, she dedicated herself to teaching English and reading in Virginia Beach elementary schools, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
