Even though I only knew him for a little bit through my family, I was grateful for his hospitality and enjoyed watching old sci-fi movies while eating Trader Joe’s strawberry ice cream when I visited Cali. Every time I get that ice cream I think of him and his kindness and generosity. More people should be like him. I do miss him. 💙
Gordon was very supportive when I had encountered problems with my school. He listened well, advised  and was not judgmental.  We were friends meeting from the generous gatherings at the Boleys home. He thought the world of his children.

I knew Gordon in high school. We bonded over a love of Shakespeare (took a class together) and went to the senior prom together. He left for the service and I went to college, but we kept in touch, on and off, over the years, most recently in Facebook. I just googled to figure out why I hadn't seen him in awhile on Facebook and found this. He spoke of his love for his children and his wonderful marriage to Sianny (and being embraced by her family). The above photo captures what I remember most in him - a wonderful love of life along with a sense of wonder and light-heartedness. My love and condolences to his family (including Patty and Vicki).

I have been lucky enough to maybe one of the few to know Gordon for a very long time now as my older brother. I was very close to Gordon from a very young age. He taught me to count to three hundred at three years old. By six years old Gordon had tight me to play chess. He used to take me down to our local park in Simi Valley, Calif. and make me play against teenagers and adults. He was the best babysitter. We came from a family of six kids and as the oldest Gordon quite often babysat for me and my younger brother and sister... We knew phrases in French and Spanish from him and he taught us all how to hit someone first to break his nose if confronted. All before grade two. We would talk about every weird subject known to man and I spent hours watching him make model planes and paint them in detail.. Gordon was unearthly intelligent. Like scary smart. He could mimic accents, languages driving my mom crazy... We used to call him in jest "Gorgon the mystery Carle". When it came to math he worked 4 grades ahead from kindergarten going forward. He was a wrestler, boxer and runner. He was the very best older brother I could have ever had. Now that the brothers and sisters grow older we will all miss you Gordon.. I look forward to being with you soon enough big brother.
Until then, please keep an eye open for us all as I know you are. I miss you and love you so very much brother. When we can travel across the border I will come to California to see you for a long visit.
Scott

My first encounter with Gordon is still very fresh in my mind. It was August of 1975. The fall semester at Southern California College was about to start and students were moving into the dorms. I arrived on campus earlier in the week and had already moved into my dorm room. The Saturday night before class registration I went out with friends. I returned late that night, and when entered my dorm room to find Gordon asleep on the second bed. He was to be my new dorm mate. Not wanting to disturb him, I left the lights off and went to my desk to work on some art. But disturb him I did, and he woke up in full vigor – as if he hadn’t been asleep at all. Immediately I knew that his personality was enough to light the room. From that night on, I called him “Flash Gordon.”

In looking back over the last 40+ years, knowing Gordon has been a bit of a journey. In many ways we were unlikely friends as our world views were quite different, but we shared many common interests and passions. It was a unique relationship in that way. Still, Gordon’s journey involved many twists and turns. He loved elaborate and historical strategy games, science fiction, theories about UFO’s, Astronomy, Theology and a restaurant called “Hamburger Hamlet” in Costa Mesa. For years, Saturday nights were “Boy’s Night Out” when we would take in a movie or lecture somewhere, then dinner afterwards.
I’m going to miss Gordon. He was always there. But now he is somewhere else and I plan on seeing him there one of these days (though I can’t imagine eternity with him as my dorm mate!).

Dear Gordon.

We had the chance to meet you a couple of years ago. What a privilege spending time with you and family. Discuss (sometimes in French :) ), laugh, share recipe, cook and gather with your beloved ones.

We miss this unforgettable and authentic moments of peace and joy.
