I first met Gloria at Birmingham Southern as a new Freshman who cried every night in home sickness! She was the best sister-in-law to be (at that point) along with her lovely, hilarious sister Linda and family. This woman was unique among women. She was THE most genuine, authentic person it has ever been my pleasure to connect with. ALWAYS. I shall miss that giggle and that sigh at the end of it. I shall miss that “OH, RUTH!” When I emailed something ridiculous to the GroupMe page. And I will miss her everpresent smile and love for me and mine. She was never an in-law. She was our sister!

The Lord truly blessed me when he allowed the loving and caring Gloria Slaughter to be a part of my life!
Thoughts of Hope and Comfort
by Helen Steiner Rice
After the clouds, the sunshine,
After the winter, the spring,
After the shower, the rainbow,
for a life is a changeable thing.
After the night, the morning,
bidding all darkness cease,
After life’s cares and sorrows,
the comfort and sweetness of peace.
Rest in Peace my friend,
Joan Brown Cunningham

I first met Gloria and John in the summer of 1979. A bunch of us gathered together at a lake with cabins to do some study. Gloria’s children were there, both teenagers. My son, Nick, was with us and he had just turned 4 years old. He got into some mischief, as little kids do. Gloria then spoke her immortal words to me, words I have never forgotten, “Don’t worry. When things get dark, just remember: You WILL live through your child’s teen age years.” I have often passed this wisdom on and am complimented every time for my sagaciousness!

I was [ deeply saddened ] when I heard the news of Gloria's passing. She was truly one of the sweetest people that I have ever met. She also was a champion for justice, an unsung hero.

I'm sure stories will come to me in time, but when I think of Gloria, I think of her warm, reassuring presence. In our work, she was a true comrade who always pushed us to think hard about what we needed to do, and, at the same time, she was always so kind and supportive in the process. As her many students, friends, and colleagues over the years could attest, she cared about what we had to say and to contribute, and she helped us find our way. Sending all my love to John, her family, and the many others who are forever grateful to have known her. Danny
