Gloria's obituary
Gloria was born June 15, 1947 in East St. Louis, Illinois. Her family later relocated to the Quad Cities where she attended United Township High School. Gloria was active in band, being the only female trombone player, and in Future Nurses of America. Gloria also learned to sew during this time and became an accomplished seamstress and was in high demand for alterations.
Gloria worked as a line operator at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, Iowa immediately after high school, where she was one of the youngest ammunition machine operators and the only woman in her section. She spoke with pride of her work in support of America’s troops.
In 1970, Gloria married Rex Camp, Sr. of Davenport. They had 3 dearly loved children together.
Gloria became a CNA, working primarily with geriatric patients, but she found losing patients upsetting. She instead decided to work with children in Davenport schools. She was a vocational childcare instructor at Davenport West High School and, later, a para-educator for students with special needs. Gloria retired from the Scott County School District in 2014.
Gloria was an integral part of her church communities and loved to share her faith with others. She was often the first to offer her time, talent, and treasure to church activities. She could be found at various bible study groups, women’s groups, and teaching young women of the church to sew or knit. She also loved scripture. She could (and did!) go on for hours talking about different passages of the Bible.
Gloria is survived by her four children: Melanie Gatlin of Atlanta, Georgia, Michelle (Bruce) Laster of Gadsden, Alabama, Rex (Tiffany) of Davenport, Iowa, and Marylee (Christopher) Camp-Brandt of Louisville, Kentucky. She will also be remembered by her brother, Kater Gatlin, her sisters, Rosemary Burrell, Gwendolyn Gatlin, and Barbara Ewing-Bailey, 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and countless extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved mother, Rosa Gatlin-Ross, stepfather, and an infant granddaughter, named Gloria in her honor.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in St. Matthews, Kentucky on Friday, February 28th at 2:00 PM. In honor of Gloria’s unique sense of style, please wear bright colors, florals, and/or a fabulous hat.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of Hosparus Health of Louisville, the members of St Matthews United Methodist Church and the employees of Schneider Electric for their care and kindness.
