Gina's obituary
Gina Marie Mahoney (née Galassi) was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all.
She was born on July 26, 1964 to Palma and Naldo Galassi. She grew up in Villa Park with her siblings Marc, Mary, and Cara, and attended Willowbrook High School. They enjoyed a classic Italian-American upbringing, always surrounded by lots of family, great food, and the occasional rogue rooster attack.
In 1982 she married Patrick Mahoney, with whom she shared many great memories of going to concerts, enjoying family vacations, and arguing about who liked ELO first. They had three children, Neal, Angie, and Alyssa.
Her daughter Angie married Ryan Vallera in 2011, and in 2014 they welcomed Gina's two grandsons, Dominic and Jackson, forming the world's most multi-talented family. She marveled at Dominic's curiosity, kindness, and patience, and at Jackson's creativity, spontaneity, and energetic spirit.
She was immensely proud of her daughter Alyssa's myriad passions and achievements. In 2021, Alyssa introduced the family to her human teddy bear in the form of Michael Brown.
In summer of 2025 Gina danced the night away to the wedding of her son Neal and daughter-in-law Andrea Slivka, and celebrated again in December with the birth of her granddaughter Henrietta Marie, who shares her grandma's middle name.
She experienced great joy with the arrival of each of her nieces and nephews - Sean, Ryan, Kristine, Kyle, Gianna, Marina, Colin, Makenzie, Brandon, and Tiffanie; and the welcoming of her siblings' partners Brian Wilson, Chris Janis, and Diana LaBianco over the years. She also had a close bond with Patrick's large family, including parents Betty and John, and siblings Teri, Jack, Kevin, and Patty.
Gina loved going on adventures with her family, whether on another continent, roadtripping across the US, taking her grandsons to concerts, rocking her granddaughter to sleep, or relaxing in her backyard pool with her furry pal Leo close by. She was incredibly smart and worked hard her whole life to make sure her family was provided for. She also had an understated silly side and could make a room suddenly light up with unexpected laughter at any given time.
Friends and family knew her as selfless, compassionate, and loving above all else. Her children and grandchildren were her world, and her biggest joy was spending time with them, always making sure they felt safe, secure, and loved. She could never imagine how important her influence was on making them the people they are today. There aren't adequate words to express how much love she gave and how much she was loved in turn.
She passed peacefully on January 28, 2026 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL. Arrangements for a gathering to remember and celebrate her life will follow shortly.
