Wally's obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Walter “Wally” Kortzman announce his passing on Monday, September 19, 2022, at age 90 in Jasper, Alberta.
Wally was born on July 29, 1932, in Bruce, Alberta to Walter and Myrtle Kortzman. He moved to Jasper at age 18 to work for the Canadian National Railway where he worked for 39 years. On October 21, 1966, he married Donna Kortzman. They raised four children: Doug, Shelley, Walter “Sonny” and Robyn.
After retiring from the railroad in 1989, Wally was never one to sit still for too long, so he focused his attention on his two passions: hunting and curling. Wally and his brother started Torlea Guiding Services in which they operated a waterfowl hunting lodge for 12 years. In addition to guiding, Wally was also the ice maker at the Jasper Curling Club where he went on to ‘perfect’ his ice for 28 years. There are many traits that we can attribute to Wally. Those that know him best would describe him as hardworking, honest, generous and always quick with a ‘one liner’.
Wally was predeceased by his mother and father, Walter and Myrtle, sisters Georgina and Juanita, and his wife Donna.
He is survived by his four children, Doug (Valerie), Shelley (Rachelle), Sonny and Robyn (Blain), brother Lyall (Frances), sister Karen (Dwayne), several nieces and nephews, his grandchildren, Courtney, Devon, Bryan (Becca) and Lianna (Keil), and great grandchildren, Linkon and Bodhi.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the Jasper Curling Club between 2-6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to a charity of one’s choice.
