It is with a heavy heart I write this. Gertrude was my friend and colleague at the college. She brought a ray of Brooklyn sunshine into any room she entered. She was a joy to teach with. I send my deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

My sincere condolences to Gertrude's family. Her husband, siblings, children and grandchildren (the apple of her eye). Gertrude was my dear friend and confidante, suitemate at the College, lunch buddy, and mentor to my daughter. Like "Enoch" Gertrude walked with God. Her serenity, attitude, integrity, character, tenacious spirit, and formidable strength made her special. Forever in our hearts.

Sister Beverly asked that I post this for her:
Greetings family, friends and acquaintances. It is with great sorrow and joy I am aligning my thoughts and prayers for our beautiful and determined Sistah Gert. She was a stalwart, a general but no nonsense entity who always prepared for success in all she addressed. There are so many times we Sisters in Service gathered to commune with each other, learn new means and ways to celebrate the sanctity of our Sisterhood and at wonderful, played great games while learning more about our contribution to our world. It was always Sistah Gert who thought about the many ways we could combine the Sistah's in Service to assist others to overcome their challenges and succeed in assisting other Sisters to be prepared for their new lifestyle. Our intent was to combine our skills to teach incarcerated women how to proceed into their new world while receiving means for internet and laptop skills, with appropriate clothing and logical thinking to venture into a new world where their opportunities would be endless. However, we were informed by the prison facility that these jails did not need our assistance, although we were aware, these facilities had made no plans to bring these incarcerated women into their new lifestyle to be.
Gert did not allow this brick wall to deter her from assisting young women to be taught how to be the best nursing staff ever presented. She spent approximately 2-3 years as a traveling Nurse and another 3-4 years as an excellent instructor to educate other female scholars how to perform the best care for needy patients while completing her bachelor's degree as an instructor. Our Sistah Geraldine never allowed naysayers to stop her from fulfilling her mission. There was only one Gert and she was a mighty force, I am thankful for all my Sistah's in Service and especially grateful for the opportunity and likelihood we experienced when operating under Gert's tutelage and ideas to make our efforts meaningful, fun and accessible to all who needed it. It is with great pleasure that I was able to enjoy Sistah Gert's tenacity and to witness her tutelage as she continued to prepare the next generation of excellent nurses and helped us all to learn how to enjoy the brilliance of the female brain. I am thankful that our Sistah Gert did not suffer during her transition. I am even more grateful and excited about the opportunities to experience a wonderful human specimen at work. May Allah be pleased with her soul, and may all the remaining Sistah's always celebrate the joy, skills, thoughts, actions and teachings of our Dear Sistah Gert! Allahuwakbar
Sistah Beverly!

I met Gertrude at an event at GYAC in Gifford, Florida at a health fair. Right off the bat, our spirits connected. We were on the same frequency. She was like a sister from another mister. I told her about teaching opportunities at the local state college. We stayed connected and supported one another as colleagues and coworkers. My heart is so heavy. I know that we all must go "home" at some point. I will miss her laughter, her smile, discussing life's concepts, and just the routine of contacting her. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband, siblings, children, grandchildren, and other family members. Her spirit will always be in my heart....

To the entire family, words cannot express how sadden I was to hear that this wonderful woman has gone on to be with the Lord. I had missed her smiles and her talks at Bethel when she moved hoping to see her and her lovely family again, but God knows what best. Rest on my sister. You will always be remembered.

I want to extend my deepest condolences to Gertrudes’s family for the passing of such an amazing person, and will keep you all in my prayers and thoughts. Mrs Walcott was one of our nursing instructors in Nurse 1. I will never forget her tough love way of teaching only to make us better nurses some day. Gods Bless.
