Gérard's obituary

Gérard Paul Pereira died peacefully at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal surrounded by his wife, daughter, and son-in-law on October 13, 2021.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Céline, and his two children, Pierre (Karina) and Marie-Françoise (Vince), a grandson, Shawn Pereira-Muir (Chelsey), and a granddaughter, Lucille Muir, as well as loving brothers and sisters.

Dr. Pereira was a graduate of Columbia University and had a Master of Science and a Ph.D. degree in anatomical sciences and cell biology from McGill University in Montreal. As a graduate student he was the first lecturer in histology at the new Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, Canada (1966-68). He has had more than 25 years of experience in administration and basic science teaching and research in medical schools, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University where he also served on the Faculty Council (1972-76) and the Executive Committee (1973-75) as an elected member as well as on the Committee on Permanent Equipment, the Committee on Interdisciplinary Professional Appointments and the Committee on Dissemination of Information as co-Chairman. He was a visiting professor at Georgetown University in Georgetown (Washington, D.C.), the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Canada), and the University of Lagos in Lagos (Nigeria) where he introduced the electron microscope as part of his visiting professorship.

Dr. Pereira dedicated many years in researching the new deep ocean water (DOW) technologies, which were developed and tested by the CHC scientists and others at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority for the purpose of establishing self-sufficient, economically, culturally and environmentally sustainable community habitats in coastal regions of tropical island nations that lie adjacent to deep ocean water. It was Dr. Pereira’s dream and vision to extend this technology to the country of Haiti which resulted in the development of his company, Energinat, which he founded in 1996.

In lieu of flower donations it is asked that random acts of kindness are provided in his memory.
