Gerald's obituary

Dear Friends and Family,

It is with broken hearts and sadness that we announce Gerald Ray Tucker, 68, of Odessa, Missouri, died on October 20, 2025, at Avera Eureka Community Hospital from cardiac arrest. He passed away doing what he loved: having enjoyed breakfast on an autumn day with the company of dear ones, while on a hunting trip in South Dakota. Gerald knew no stranger. He was a cherished dad, grandpa, son, brother, uncle, great uncle, and friend.

Gerald was born in Sugar Creek, Missouri, on August 27, 1957, to John and Fern Tucker, the third of three children, and a rainbow baby preceded in death by his newborn brother, Paul. Gerald attended Weaubleau High School before transferring and graduating from Van Horn High School in Independence, Missouri (1975). Gerald went on to trade school and started in the construction industry as a rough-in carpenter framing houses. He later went on to master every aspect of home construction and honing his craft, designing and building custom cabinetry that could be found all over the metropolitan area. Gerald also loved to discuss theology and completed an Associate's in Bible at Tri-City Baptist Seminary (1999).

Gerald grew up enjoying sports and shenanigans with his older brother, cousins, and friends. Gerald began playing basketball in grade school and continued to love playing and coaching throughout his life. A devoted Missouri University and Kansas City sports fan (and passionate KU hater!), Gerald enjoyed attending MU games in recent years. Gerald was a cowboy before cowboys were cool and loved the outdoors, conservation, state fairs, and being on the water or in nature. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved escaping on special hunting or fishing trips to “the farm” or on out-of-state adventures with the men he dearly loved. Gerald was also a Renaissance Man: quickly moved to tears by art, music, theatre, and Anne of Green Gables. He was easy to please, but also loved the art of a good meal. His Grandpa Ozbun first introduced Gerald to the trade work that would direct his profession. Anyone in conversation with Gerald would discover he knew something about everything and frequently used ordinary encounters to knowledge-share some detail, anecdote, or history that turned even the most mundane moments into points of interest. Above all, Gerald was a master storyteller and story collector. Gerald’s love, life, and energy were spent on the relationships that meant most to him. His warmth, humor, generosity, and sparkle shaped our lives. We cannot articulate the devastation of losing Gerald, and we will miss him deeply. The impact of his larger-than-life presence in our lives will continue to guide and comfort us.

Gerald was preceded in death by his father John Tucker, and is survived by his mother Fern Tucker Haynes (Frank), of El Dorado, MO; brother John Tucker (Gloria) of Overland Park, KS; wife Beth Tucker of Odessa, MO; children Ann (Andrew) Weiss of Houston, TX; Lydia Tucker Vogt of Arlington, VA; Paul (Becki) Tucker of Independence, MO; Rachel (Bryan) Oliver of Independence, MO; 15 grandchildren, and nephew Jason Tucker of Rolla, MO.

A visitation for Gerald begins at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Odessa,100 Highway OO, Odessa, Missouri 64076. An intimate graveside service for close family will be held at a later date at Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery in Collins, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Gerald’s Memorial Fund on this site. Please direct expressions of sympathy to Fern (Tucker) Haynes at the Bungalows in Nevada.
