Gerald's obituary
Gerald “Jerry” Joseph Soetaert passed away peacefully on Saturday February 24, 2024, at the age of 88 while in Hospice Care with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents Margaret and John, brothers and sisters Bernard, Mildred, Bernice, Janice, Regina, Marge, Dorothy, John and Patricia. He is survived by his wife Barbara of more than 66 years. He leaves behind two sons, Jeff, wife Vicki (Olathe) and Greg, wife Melanie (KCMO), and a daughter Geralyn, and husband Tony Starr (KCMO). Jerry was very proud of his grandchildren Sydney Soetaert, Tyler Soetaert, and Jackson Starr. He also leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, that he truly cherished.
Jerry grew up in the Kansas City area and attended Bishop Lillis High School where he excelled at basketball. He once held the local parochial school record for most consecutive free throws recorded in league play. He spent time in the Air Force stationed at Richards Gebaur Air Base during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He received his Honorable Discharge and went to work for TWA in the Accounting Department. He enjoyed a lengthy professional career with the airline. Jerry loved to read numerous sports books, his true passion. He read the KC Star daily, and would frequently correspond with the editor. He had many of his letters published over the years. He was an avid reader until his passing.
Visitation services and rosary will be held at St. Gabriel Archangel Church, 4737 N. Cleveland Ave. Kansas City, Mo. 64117 on Monday March 4th, at 5:00PM.
Funeral Mass Tuesday March 5th, 10:00AM at St. Gabriel Archangel Church. The family wishes to invite friends and family to attend a luncheon immediately following mass.
A military service and burial at Ft. Leavenworth will be determined at a future date.
