Hard to believe over a year has passed without you.   In that time, I've given 21 flags to fly in your memory.   I miss you every single day and am trying to keep your memory alive.   I will probably never tell a story as well as you did, but I'll keep telling them anyway.   😉
Tomorrow is a belated memorial gathering for Russ in Chicago. Will be thinking about Dad, too, and missing them both an awful lot.
Hey you Ol' Geezer ... I'm missing you on this first Christmas Day without you here. I'm sad for all of us. But I'm happy that you are in heaven, no more pain, no more struggles, with Mom and now with Russ as well. I'll do my best to keep you alive in our hearts with silly stories and happy memories. You gave us so many of both!

Another fun Tuba Christmas! This pic appeared in the Argus Leader (newspaper). Dad was the oldest player again that year, at the age of 85.

Geezer and I played in lots of Tuba Christmas concerts over the years. He was frequently the oldest old geezer in attendance. In later years, Cody joined us as well. The Sioux Falls paper wrote an article on us one year since we had 3 generations playing. We had so much fun!

My Uncle Jerry. Boy! He could drive me crazy with his jokes. But he & Uncle Dick both had the greatest stories about our family! I could listen to that for hours. I was explaining to my son, Zane, about growing up in Marcus as a Pallesen. Aunt Marge lived in Rochester, NY, but cousin Tim spent some of every summer with us. My dad, Ken, Jerry, Dick & Bonnie & all their families (15 grandchildren) all lived within an hour of Marcus. I think we spent every holiday, Birthday, anniversary at grandpa & grandma's house. Oh, & most Sundays also-just in case we missed each other! My cousins were my best friends. Swimming, tobogganing, school activities, drawing names for Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve at grandma's & then going together, enmass to midnight, candlelight church always ending with Silent Night. Miller family reunions. The Old Red Barn. Man! Was that a feast! Learning how to polka, standing on Great Uncles feet! Hayrides! The Swings! I bet there were 200 or more of us at times! And I felt like my family WAS Marcus. At different times, Grandpa Nels was the mayor (got the Swimming pool built). GrandpaNels also played his trumpet in the Lawrence Welk band of ND before he was famous! Dad worked almost his whole adult life for "Sand's", was town treasurer & was volunteer fire chief & would trim & cut down trees (especially for l Dick was ourittle old widows). Jerry was the postmaster for ever & taught gun safety to about every boy in town. He also was involved with anything military.-poppy day, Avenue of Flags & of course, playing taps at military funerals in 4 or 5 states - an honorary chieftain of a ND Indian tribe - very humbled, honored & well known in the upper midwest. Dick was our military Navy submariner during the Korean conflict. And Bonnie was the best mushroom & asparagus finder in town & quite the tracker - according to her big brothers!

Anyway, growing up a Pallesen in Marcus had a LOT of responsibility to go with it. Plus,,you could never get away with anything! Every adult in town knew who you were and who you belonged to. And I believe it was the best way in the world to grow up!

Loosing Jerry and 3 days later, Dick has been a hard pill to swallow for me. I have not been in good health for the past many years and I think my 2 remaining Uncles had a plan that they took turns calling me weekly to check up on me and try to keep my spirits up. I think they will know how much I will miss them

Come on Cousins & relatives! Let's make Jerry's flags a great honor for him!! He deserves our support 💜 ❤ 👏 💙
