Jerry's obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Arvene Lockwood was born September 16, 1946, in Port Huron, Michigan to Clyde and Kathleen (Terrell) Lockwood. He died of mantle cell lymphoma May 19, 2020, at age 73, in Everett, Washington.

Jerry grew up in North Platte, Nebraska. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska where he received his B.A. in Mathematics and Economics in 1969. With a low number in the lottery, Jerry was drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. His application for Conscientious Objector status was denied and he was stationed in Germany until 1971.

He returned to Lincoln, Nebraska and was married to Diane Lee from 1973 to 1981. From 1971 to 1987 he worked as an Actuary in the life insurance industry, including jobs with Mutual of Omaha and Lincoln Liberty Life Insurance Co., then as a consultant for Peat Marwick Mitchell and later with Milliman and Robertson in Seattle. Jerry met Janet Graves who was a casualty actuary at M&R and they married in 1988. They moved to Cincinnati where Jerry became Senior Vice-President & Corporate Actuary for The Union Central Life Insurance Company. Jerry retired in 2002 at the age of 55 and moved back to Mukilteo, WA. He and Janet enjoyed traveling and visited China, Southeast Asia, Japan, India and Bhutan, Nepal, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina and Chile. They also spent relaxing vacations in Hawaii, Guatemala and Mexico.

Jerry was always very physically active. He enjoyed tennis, ping pong, canoeing in the Boundary Waters and backpacking. He was an avid downhill skier. After retiring he was very active with the Seattle Mountaineers, especially the Scramble Committee. He climbed more than 100 non-technical peaks in Washington State as well as Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Mount Hood, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Soon after retiring Jerry began the study of Buddhism and was a serious Buddhist practitioner for the rest of his life. He was a Board Member and treasurer of Seattle Insight Meditation Society.

Jerry is survived by his wife Janet Graves Lockwood; stepson Eric Graves; father Clyde and stepmother Mary Ann Lockwood; siblings Carol Frye, William Lockwood (Lucy Del Giorgio) and Marcia Jones (Michael); long time best friend William Frye (Mary Brzezinski); step siblings James Lockwood, Mary Greenwood-Bell (Mark) and Connie, John (Nancy), and Joann Greenwood (Ray Jones); nieces and nephews Carrie and Sara Frye, Natalie Hendrickson (John) and Jeremy Jones (Kristen); and numerous great nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother Kathleen Pearl Terrell Lockwood.
