Gerald's obituary

Gerald Leon Lewis was born November 23 ,1938 in Abilene, Texas to Aubrey Lois Lewis and Gladys Evelyn Harrison. His older sister was Norma Jean Lewis (Henry). In high school, Gerald dated Peggy Jane Bennett and they were married June 28, 1958 in Abilene. They remained happily married for the next 66 years, until her passing. Peggy and Gerald welcomed three children to the world, Donald Lee Lewis, Debra Jane Lewis (Clemmer) and Cheryl Marie Lewis (White).

In high school, Gerald was on the Abilene High School Varsity baseball team, playing as a right fielder. During this time, the Abilene High Eagles won the Texas State Championship in 1955 and 1956. Because of his skill as a baseball player, Gerald was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but declined going pro. Gerald was also the Equipment Manager for the Abilene High football team, during the period they won multiple state championships. During their marriage, Peggy and Gerald loved to go to Abilene High football games, watching Texas Tech Football, the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys.

As a young man, Gerald became the owner of Swinney Glass Company and Abilene Auto-Glass. He was a skilled craftsman in framing pictures and many paintings, portraits and art works in Abilene and beyond were hand framed by him. Gerald served in the Texas National Guard from the late 1950's to the early 1960's, in Field Artillery. He was also an avid golfer at the Abilene Country Club.

Gerald and Peggy were long-time members at First Baptist Church of Abilene. Gerald and Peggy not only believed in Christ, but actually lived their lives with dignity, faith and steadfastness. Gerald was never a man to preach at another person; his conduct, behavior and mannerisms proclaimed his faith more than any words could do. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Gerald and Peggy's life together shined brightly.

Gerald was preceded in this life by his parents, sister and wife Peggy.

Gerald is survived by his son Donald Lee Lewis (Danette) of Spring, Texas, daughter Debra Jane Clemmer (Steve) of Abilene, Texas, and daughter Cheryl Marie White (Bruce) of Buda, Texas. He is also survived by six grandchildren: David Allen Clemmer (wife Stacey) of Abilene, Texas; Bryan Wesley Clemmer of Oklahoma; Andrew Layne "Drew" Lewis of Austin, Texas; Anthony Lee Lewis (wife Jenna) of Spring, Texas; Dr. Benjamin Lewis White MD (wife Krithika) of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Bethany Marie White (husband Lucas) of San Francisco, California. Gerald was also the proud great-grandfather of three great-grandsons: Trenton Clemmer, and Valen & Suryan White.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled at First Baptist Church of Abilene, on Saturday, October 5th, 2024 - at 2:00 PM.
