Gerald "Gerry"'s obituary
Gerald “Gerry” Patrick Murray of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully at home with his family on March 9th, 2025, at the age of 93. Gerry was born on October 23, 1931, in the Bronx, New York.He graduated from Fordham University with a degree in business and accounting.
Gerry began working at the young age of 9, shining shoes. He worked throughout high school and college. He had many jobs, such as delivering newspapers, working at Liggets drugstore on 75th St. & Madison Ave in Manhattan, and working nights in the Main U S post office in Manhattan. Once he graduated college, he joined the Army in September of 1953. He served two years and was honorably discharged in 1955. Upon leaving the army, he joined the New York office of Ernst and Ernst (Now EY). In 1963, he accepted a position in the Sao Paulo office, where he became partner in charge of Brazil and remained until his retirement in 1993. He was the first employee to be permanently assigned overseas.
Gerry had a zest for life and a sharp sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf, boating, the arts, theater, dance, and visual art. He returned to the US in 1993 to live in Sarasota, where he made new friends and enjoyed the good food, the sea, and the warm weather.
Gerry is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sonia Adam Murray, his children, Kristina (Reginald) Breton, Michelle (Javier) Warra, Karen Lewis, Séan (Caitlin) Murray, and Diana (Quinn) Felton. His grandchildren, Antônio Breton; Lorenzo and Andrés Warra; Sebastian, Tristen, and Gabriel Lewis; Luca Murray; and Nikolas, Devin, and Amari Felton. He was preceded in death by his father, Patrick Murray; his mother, Anne Murray; his brother, John (Ceil) Murray; and his sister, Maureen Murray.
His funeral service will be held at St. Martha’s Catholic Church. Thursday, March 27 at 10 00 a.m. at 200 N Orange Ave, Sarasota Fl 34236. The burial will follow at the Sarasota National Cemerty at 1:00 p.m. at 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
