George's obituary
George A. Wootten, Q.C.
1930-2022
On June 30th, 2022, George Alexander Wootten, loving spouse, father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at age 91.
George was born on November 24th, 1930, in Sudbury, Ontario, the eldest son of George and Doris Wootten (nee Fournier). He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Toronto, his LL.B degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, and later in 1971, was designated as Queen's Counsel. His legal career began in Toronto with the firm Lee Wootten & Dyson. Initially practising both litigation and criminal law, George was a very fine lawyer who was steadfastly devoted to the interests of his clients. Later on, he devoted himself to criminal trials until finally retiring in his 80's.
George had a passion for Law, and he had a passion for Life. When a subject interested him, he dove headlong into the field with great gusto. His pursuits were many, and were wide-ranging. There was boxing, football, hockey, horse riding in Sudbury, badminton, tennis, bridge, and a keen interest in history. Perhaps the sports hobby George pursued the most was racing Lightning boats. Through the RCYC, he honed his skills and raced competitively for years through many North American waters.
An avid music lover throughout his life, George learned to play the trumpet. He even had a weekly radio show in his Sudbury years where he would play the trumpet and sing. George's singing was effortless. His lovely tone and true pitch never faltered, and he found and gave joy with his musical voice. Happiness was listening to wonderful live music, often in jazz club venues, or alternatively, enjoying standards, classical, and jazz CD's.
George received full time care in his final year at Wellington Park Care Centre, and as always, handled his increased health issues with strength and grace. His big heart, understanding, infectious laugh and delighted smile are gifts to remember. He will be sorely missed, always deeply loved, and never ever forgotten.
George is predeceased by his dear parents and his close brother John. He is survived by his loving spouse Barb; much loved sons George Jr. and Greg; beloved sister-in-law Sue and younger brother Paul; loving mother-in-law Mary and brother-and-sister-in-law Don and Anne; adored nieces April, Brian, Nisha, Leeanne, Stacey and Wendy; and Friends who were truly family.
